Nat Fyfe’s Troublesome Foot Injury Flares Up Again

Ben H / 3 July 2023

Fremantle skipper Nat Fyfe lasted three quarters in the 29-point defeat to the Western Bulldogs on Saturday before his foot got worse. The two-time Brownlow medalist winner, who went goalless from twelve disposals, was replaced by Neil Erasmus.

Fyfe has struggled with injuries in recent seasons and coach Justin Longmuir confirmed the player’s plantar fasciitis foot flared up and got sore during the game. Longmuir said Fyfe that same foot had been bothering him before so they had to take him off.

Fyfe Might Be Out for a Couple of Weeks

The Fremantle coach wasn’t sure if the recurring injury would force the skipper to miss next week’s game with Carlton or if Fyfe might be ruled out of action for longer.

He said time would tell if Fyfe’s foot is getting better or worse, but did confirm the player was disappointed to have been subbed out, especially as it was an injury that he had been carrying for some time. The club would now assess Fyfe’s situation further, Longmuir said. Then they would take things from there.

Fyfe Managed the Injury, But it Felt Sorer than Usual on Saturday

The coach conceded that despite Fyfe successfully managing the foot with plantar fasciitis, the nature of the injury meant it only goes away after a prolonged period of rest, something Fyfe would only get after the end of the season.

In other words, Longmuir confirmed Fyfe was aware of the problem and was often playing through the pain, but that pain wasn’t getting worse. However, it did get “a bit sorer than usual” on Saturday so the decision was made to introduce fresh legs and take Fyfe off.

Fyfe played only nine games this season and missed six. He made nine appearances last year and fifteen the year before that. Last month, the Brownlow medalist extended his contract until the end of 2025.
