Betting On The AFL
AFL betting is offered on a variety of markets, including the premiership, Brownlow Medal, Rising Star, and Coleman Medal.
No sport stirs the passions of Australians quite like the AFL. It is the country’s number one sport and provides a much-needed sense of community for all sports lovers.
From the outback of the Northern Territory to the southern tip of Tasmania, it seems like footy (Australian Rules Football) is only getting more popular. AFL betting has seen a big rise in punters, especially online. You no longer need to take a break from work to visit your local TAB or pub.
The days of queuing up to wager on your favourite football team are long gone. If you like sports, you may now bet on your favourite teams using online bookies such as Bluebet, Ladbrokes, BetDeluxe, Neds, and Palmerbet.
AFL betting is changing all the time. In the past, you only bet on the AFL team you thought would win in head-to-head markets or perhaps on each game’s winning margin. Now there are a variety of different AFL bets to choose from, including games, the AFL premiership, Brownlow Medal, Coleman Medal, Rising Star Awards, and even oddities like individual achievements. You can now combine several wagers into a Same Game Multi (a method of betting that is becoming increasingly popular).
If you’re looking for something a little different than a head-to-head AFL wager, how about betting on which player will score the first goal? Or perhaps which player will have the most disposals for the game? There are many more examples. Each weekend, bookmakers provide extra incentives to take advantage of.
How to Bet on the AFL
There are many ways to bet on AFL matches, but we’ll guide you through some of the most popular ones. See below for a summary or read our more comprehensive guide on how to bet on AFL.
Head-to-Head
Head-to-Head betting is the simplest way to gamble on most sports matches. Simply select who you think will win, and if they do, so do you.
LINE BETTING and HANDICAP BETTING:
Line betting is when the bookmaker tries to level the playing field between two teams by setting a specific margin. For example, if the bookmaker believes Team A is 7 points better than ‘Team B’, they will handicap ‘Team A’ by 7 points. This means that in order for bettors on Team A to win their bets, ‘Team A’ must beat ‘Team B’ by more than 7 points.
WINNING MARGINS:
The margin is the bookmaker’s offer for when you predict the end result score of a game. The punter must choose not just the winning team, but also the correct margin. If you think ‘Team A’ will defeat ‘Team B’ and want to wager on the margin, you must anticipate how many points there will be between the two teams at full-time. So, if you feel like ‘Team A’ will win by a margin of 1 to 39 points, ‘Team A’ must then win by that margin. If ‘Team B’ wins by that margin it does not count.
FIRST GOALSCORER:
With this option, you can choose which player from either team you think will score the first goal of the game. You can also bet on anytime goalscorer which is usually a safer option.
TOTAL POINTS:
Betting on the total is a popular choice. The Over and Under are two sides of the Total. The number of combined points between the two teams is referred to as the ‘Total’. For example, if the Demons and the Bulldogs are playing and you predict that the score will be UNDER -145, then the total score of the entire game must be less than 145. Alternatively, you can choose the OVER which means that they will have to score higher than a specified total.

Line betting is handicap betting for Australian rules football. When using line betting, you will see that the underdog receives points and the favourite gives away points to equalise things. For example, say there is a match between the Essendon Bombers and the Geelong Cats, Essendon would get a handicap to try and even the playing field. Check out
