De Goey Facing Five Weeks for High Bump

Ben H / 6 June 2023

Magpies’ troubled midfielder Jordan De Goey will sit out at least three games for the reckless high bump that left West Coast’s Elijah Hewett concussed. The player was sent directly to the tribunal and could get a longer suspension of four games, meaning he won’t be available for Collingwood for five weeks.

Jordan De Goey’s careless challenge is something he didn’t need at this point of the season. The incident and subsequent suspension will jeopardize De Goey’s All-Australian selection and will spoil what has been his most consistent season.

A Weak Act and a Sickening Hit

Kane Cornes, a columnist for The Age, said that De Goey’s challenge reminded him of what Tom Stewart did to Dion Prestia, noting the defender got suspended for four games last season. So, he expected De Goey to be given a similar suspension, meaning the 27-year-old will be out of contention for five weeks.

Cornes criticized De Goey for wasting his talent and hurting his team’s chances despite playing his best season. The analyst said that, at 27, the Magpies’ midfielder had never been All-Australian and yet again found a way to “derail his season” with his “weak act” and “sickening hit.”

He compared De Goey to Patrick Dangerfield and Marcus Bontempelli, both of whom had several All-Australian selections by the age of 27. Cornes said Dangerfield and Bontempelli were champions of the game, while De Goey was finding new ways to waste his talent.

West Coast Midfielder Asks for a Longer Suspension

West Coast Eagles midfielder Dom Sheed didn’t pull any punches and asked the league to suspend De Goey for “a good month or two” for the high bump on the teenager. Sheed said he didn’t see the incident but “heard it was pretty bad.”

The midfielder also told 6PR Football that the West Coast players probably should have responded differently to what had happened and shown De Goey what they thought of the challenge.
