Disillusioned Dragons Skipper to Join the Broncos

Dragons’ captain Ben Hunt is set to join the Broncos on a short-term deal, and the move could happen as early as this week. The halfback will then make another move, to the Titans, and will play there from 2024. Hunt is expected to sign a lucrative two-year deal with the Titans and finish his career on the Gold Coast after it expires.

Broncos Coach Would Love to Have Hunt in His Squad

The Dragons’ skipper was said to be unhappy at St George Illawarra and his departure from the team he captained is reportedly a formality now. According to various reports, the moment the Dragons release him, he will move to the Broncos and play out the remainder of the season in Brisbane.

The deal will be worth about $200,000, with the Broncos obliged to talk to the Dragons before they speak to Hunt so they don’t breach anti-tampering rules.

When Hunt joins his new team, he will likely play five-eighth or hooker, as Broncos’ skipper Adam Reynolds plays halfback. With him Hunt on board, the Broncos will be among the favourites for the premiership, which they last won in 2006.

Brisbane Broncos coach Kevin Walters decided not to comment on any potential move the club could be making on Hunt. However, he didn’t hide the Broncos’ interest in him, saying “most clubs could do with Ben Hunt in their squad” and not a lot of clubs “would say no” to a player of that calibre.

Walters praised Hunt’s work ethic, describing him as “skilful and tough” before reiterating he was a Dragons’ player, so he wouldn’t say much more.

Hunt Should Join the Broncos, but at the End of the Season, Says Brisbane Great

Brisbane legend Corey Parker wasn’t sure if a move to the Broncos would make Hunt or the Dragons look good.

The former Australia international said letting your team captain and best player go to help another team while you were languishing in 15th didn’t make sense for the Dragons.

He added that Hunt wouldn’t look good too and pointed out that he wanted to play 7, but with the Broncos, he would be deployed in the 9 position.

Parker said he was OK if both parties separated at the end of the season.
