Anthony Albanese and the Labor party justified the favourites’ tag by winning the federal election in Australia. However, they continue to feature prominently in the bookie’s markets. Sportsbet is offering odds of A$1.50 for Labor winning the next election, thus making Anthony Albanese’s party the clear favourites for the next federal election too.

Going for a Back-to-Back Victory

The sports betting provider has the Coalition at odds of A$2.65 and predicts an uphill battle for Scott Morrison’s successor who will be trying to stop Albanese from doing back-to-back wins.

If you think the winner will come from a different party, Sportsbet is offering massive odds of US$51.

Sportsbet’s Sean Ormerod said that even though they were sure that the next election will be “the furthest thing from his mind,” they have made Anthony Albanese their favourite and are predicting a back-to-back victory.

Peter Dutton to Become Next Liberal Leader

Scott Morrison caused quite a stir when he announced that he would be stepping down as the Liberal leader, and that probably affected the odds of the Coalition too.

However, the former Prime Minister said that he would stay in parliament and that he was looking forward to a Liberal Government being elected in three years’ time.

Morrison took responsibility for the defeat and said that taking responsibility is what a leader should do. He claimed that he would hand over the leadership of the party during their next party room meeting, as he felt that was the appropriate thing to do.

The focus will now be on Peter Dutton who is touted as the most likely candidate to replace Morrison as Josh Frydenberg, the Liberal Party Deputy Leader is expected to lose his inner-Melbourne seat of Kooyong.

Long Spells Out of Office Have Become the Thing for Labor

Labor wins the election for the first time in over ten years. The party needed 76 seats to govern, and they won 72. However, the Greens and three independents helped Anthony Albanese’s party to form a government. Labor last won in 2010 when the election actually resulted in a hung parliament. The Liberal Party, on the other hand, triumphed in 2013, 2016, and 2019.

Interestingly, Labor’s 2007 victory also came after a decade in which the party was out of office (since 1996). However, if Sportsbet and other bookies’ markets are anything to go by, Labor won’t have to wait that long this time around.
