One Australian punter upset the odds by winning $154,759 from a $1 long-shot bet at the Victoria Racing Club-organized Melbourne Cup. The bettor went one-out in all four legs of Tuesday’s early quadrella and correctly picked the winners of races 3-6.

The lucky TAB punter went with Love Tap, priced at $12, High Approach ($21), and also got his long–shot selections right with Renosu ($31) and Bartholomeu Dias ($34).

And because incredible sums of money were wagered, the punter was $154,759 richer courtesy of the Victorian pool. If the bettor had selected the NSW pool, they would have pocketed $196 thousand.

$170,000 from a $10 Bet

Another Melbourne Cup punter struck gold too. The Victorian betting enthusiast was on holiday in Noosa when he decided to make the most of betr’s Melbourne Cup odds and staked $10 on Gold Trip to win. He also correctly predicted third-placed High Emocean ($9) with an each-way bet and benefited from a $40 Cup first four.

Interestingly, while the bettor was following his selections, the battery on his phone died. As soon as he charged his phone, the celebrations started. The bettor said he told people that if Deauville Legend came fourth, he got the first four.

According to the punter, people around him started doing calculations and his brother told him that he “just won 100 grand.” The lucky bettor then answered with “more like $170,000” as he had the bet for 167 per cent.
