The Tracks History

The Broken Hill St Patrick’s Race Club was founded in 1965 when John Toms, a well-known local trainer, had an idea to enhance local racing while also assisting the local Catholic schools in their dire financial situation.
During a round of golf with Catholic administrator Father Pat Murray, John recommended that they establish an annual racing meeting employing volunteer work from within the Catholic School system. The event would feature appealing prize money, trophies, food and drink, and of course, fashions of the field.

They discussed the concept with other racing lovers, ecstatic about the prospect. As a result, a committee was formed to prepare the inaugural racing meeting, which would take place on Saturday, March 19, 1966.
