Who will win the NBA in 2023?

Best Bets (NBA Futures 2023)

  • Boston Celtics – $10.00 – Betr

After five weeks of the 2022-23 season, the Celtics sit on top of most power rankings, leading a stacked Eastern Conference with a 12-3 record. Due to their offensive excellence to start the year, clearly leading the whole league in offensive rating, led by their star duo in Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum( who has progressed into an MVP calibre player). This, paired with their significant defensive presences in Marcus Smart (the former defensive player of the year), Tatum and Brown, will make them an incredibly tough matchup for any team all season and deep into the playoffs.

  • Milwaukee Bucks – $10.00 – Betr

The Milwaukee Bucks are also a strong contender to go all the way this year, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo, the two-time MVP and DPOY winner. The bucks started the season 9-0, but after a few injuries, they sit at 11-3 behind the Celtics in the East. The Bucks, who won the championship in 2021, had a rough run with injuries in the 2022 season, losing all-star Khris Middleton to injuries for the duration of the playoffs, which resulted in them losing in game 7 of the second round to the Celtics who then went on to make the NBA finals. However, if the Bucks can stay healthy with their great defence from Giannis, Middleton and all-star two-way guard Jrue Holiday which has led to them having the #1 ranked defence to start the year, they could be an easy choice to go all the way in the playoffs.

History of the NBA

The National Basketball Association (widely known as the NBA) is North America’s pre-eminent men’s professional basketball league. The NBA is widely considered to be the premier global professional basketball league. NBA players are the world’s best-paid athletes by average annual salary per player.

The NBA was founded initially in 1946 as the BAA or Basketball Association of America by owners of the leading ice hockey arenas in both the Northeastern and Midwestern United States and Canada. On August 3, 1949, the Basketball Association of America agreed to merge with the National Basketball League (NBL), creating the NBA. The new league had seventeen franchises based in large and small cities, large arenas, smaller gymnasiums and armouries. Then in 1950, the NBA consolidated into eleven franchises, and this continued up until 1953–54 when the league then reached its smallest size of eight franchises:

  • Boston Celtics
  • Fort Wayne Pistons (currently known as the Detroit Pistons)
  • Minneapolis Lakers
  • Philadelphia Warriors
  • Rochester Royals (presently known as the Sacramento Kings)
  • Syracuse Nationals (currently known as the Philadelphia 76ers)
  • The New York Knicks
  • Tri-Cities Blackhawks (presently known as the Atlanta Hawks)

With the expansion in 1959 came calls for a second NBA team in New York City; an answer came with the arrival of the New York Nets (now the Brooklyn Nets) in 1967. However, in 1968, the NBA owners began a lockout that lasted 162 days and was settled only after the threat of the ABA’s expansion into major markets.

To ensure that NBA games were not preempted by competing leagues, in 1970, the NBA reached a television contract with ABC and NBC. As a result, the 1970s saw great players join the league, including Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, Julius Erving, Walt Frazier, Rick Barry, and Clyde Drexler. In 1980, Magic Johnson was drafted first overall by the Lakers. His arrival ushered in an era of excellence that continued throughout the decade; five players from the 1980s (Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, Karl Malone, and John Stockton) have all been inducted into the distinguished Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame. Jordan became a global icon with his play in the 1980s and 1990s, winning six championships with the Chicago Bulls. Karl Malone and John Stockton formed one of the most successful point-guard-power forward duos in NBA history, leading the Utah Jazz to two NBA Finals appearances. In 1984, the Boston Celtics drafted the University of North Carolina star forward Larry Bird. Joining forces with fellow Hall of Fame inductees Kevin McHale and Robert Parish, as well as future Hall of Famer Dennis Johnson, Bird led the Celtics to three NBA championships in the 1980s. The 1980s also saw several other great players join the league, including Isiah Thomas, Hakeem Olajuwon, Dominique Wilkins, and Scottie Pippen.

In the late 80s and early 90s, the Detroit Pistons emerged as one of the NBA’s top teams, winning back-to-back championships in 1989 and 1990 behind the play of Thomas, Dumars, and head coach Chuck Daly.

In the mid-1990s, many talented young players, including Anfernee “Penny” Hardaway, Shawn Kemp, Gary Payton, Reggie Miller, Grant Hill, and Kobe Bryant, entered the league. These players helped lead their teams to new levels of success, with the San Antonio Spurs winning titles in 1999 and 2003 behind the play of Tim Duncan and David Robinson. Likewise, the Los Angeles Lakers won championships in 2000, 2001, 2002, 2009, and 2010 behind Shaquille O’Neal, Kobe Bryant, and head coach Phil Jackson.

In the 2000s, a new wave of superstars emerged, including LeBron James, Dwyane Wade, Carmelo Anthony, and Dwight Howard. These players helped lead their teams to new levels of success, with the Miami Heat winning championships in 2006 and 2012 behind the play of LeBron James and Dwyane Wade.

The 2010s have seen a resurgence of the NBA’s popularity, with players such as Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Kawhi Leonard becoming household names. The Golden State Warriors recently won championships in 2015, 2017, and 2018 behind the play of Steph Curry, Kevin Durant, and Klay Thompson.

The National Basketball Association (NBA) is the primary professional basketball league in both the United States and Canada. Founded in 1946, the NBA comprises 30 teams that play an 82-game regular season from October to April. The NBA playoffs then follow, consisting of 16 teams playing best-of-seven series to determine the league champion.

The NBA has been home to many of the greatest players in history, including Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Kobe Bryant, and Michael Jordan.

The Boston Celtics proudly hold the record for the most NBA championships with 17, followed by the Los Angeles Lakers with 16. The Warriors are currently third with three titles.
