The SCG opener is always a bit of an event, and the Swans at home to kick off the season is a pretty familiar sight. My model has Sydney winning – no surprise there – but only by 8 points. That’s where it gets interesting.

The market has the Swans as massive favourites with a 22.5-point line. That’s a huge gap between what the bookies think and what I’m getting.

Carlton’s momentum score (82.2) actually edges out Sydney’s (76.3) heading in, and the Blues went 40% in their last five in 2025 – not great, but not a team in freefall either.

A 3-goal win feels right to me. A 4-goal-plus blowout? I’m not convinced.

Best Bets

Here’s the thing – the Swans are probably winning this. I’m not arguing with that.

But 22.5 points is a big ask, especially in a Round 0 season opener where teams are still finding their rhythm.

My model spits out an 8-point Sydney win. The market needs them to win by nearly three times that for the favourite line to pay out.

That’s a 14.5-point gap between what I’m seeing and what the bookies are pricing in.

I’ve backed bigger underdogs on the line when the numbers looked this skewed.

Carlton +22.5 at $1.90 is the play.

You’re not tipping a Blues upset – you’re just saying Sydney won’t run away with it by a cricket score.

That feels very reasonable to me.

Moderate stake, Carlton on the line.

What to Watch

  • That 14.5-point gap: My model has Sydney by 8, the market needs 22.5. When the model and market are this far apart, it’s usually worth a closer look – and right now, that look is pointing me toward Carlton on the line.
  • Carlton’s momentum: Their momentum score (82.2) actually edges Sydney’s (76.3) coming into this one. That’s not a team sleepwalking into the season opener.
  • Round 0 chaos factor: Season openers can be scrappy. Teams are shaking off pre-season rust, combinations are still settling, and the big favourites don’t always cover massive lines in these early games.
