This is the game of the round for mine.

Two genuine top-eight sides, both playing in Perth on neutral turf, and the market can barely split them. The Roosters are slight favourites at -0.5, but our model disagrees – it has the Sharks winning by 7. That’s a big gap between what the bookies think and what the numbers say.

Cronulla were impressive last weekend, downing the Warriors 36-22 at home. Nicho Hynes had three try assists, Will Kennedy bagged a double, and the Sharks’ attack is purring at 27.2 points per game – comfortably above the league average. They look like a side that’s found its groove after a shaky start.

The Roosters had Round 5 off on a bye, which could cut either way. Fresh legs and extra prep time, sure. But they also come in cold off a 2-2 record from their first four games with a -7.0 point differential that doesn’t exactly scream contender. Their attack has been averaging under 19 points – and that was before the Panthers humbled them 34-8 back in Round 3.

The Numbers (Last 5 Games)

Stat Sharks Roosters
Power Rank #3 #5
Form 3-2 (Good) 2-2-1 (Mixed)
Points Per Game 27.2 18.6
Conceding Per Game 23.6 25.6
Point Differential +3.6 -7.0

Here’s what I keep coming back to: the Sharks are ranked 3rd in our power rankings, the Roosters 5th. The Sharks are scoring more, conceding less, and sitting in positive differential while the Roosters are in the red. Yet the market has the Roosters as favourites? I’m not buying it.

The Roosters’ name still carries weight with bookmakers, and the bye probably bumps their price slightly. But the on-field evidence says Cronulla are the better team right now. Hynes and Braydon Trindall are running the halves beautifully, and the forward pack with Fonua-Blake and Brailey is doing the hard yards up front.

At $1.94, you’re essentially getting even money on a team that our model – and the stats – suggest should be favourite. That’s the definition of a good bet. The confidence sits at 56%, so it’s not a slam dunk, but the price more than compensates for the risk.

Bottom Line

Sharks +0.5 at $1.94 is one of the better bets of the round. The model has Cronulla winning by 7 where the market has them as slight underdogs – that disconnect is where the value lives. Take the Sharks.

The model says Sharks, the market says Roosters. When you’re getting near even money on the team the numbers favour, you take it. Cronulla’s attack has been far more potent and their form is stronger heading in.

What to Watch

  • The halves battle: Hynes and Trindall against Daly Cherry-Evans and Sam Walker. This game will be won in the playmaking department. The Sharks’ duo has been more consistent so far, but Walker can produce magic from nothing on his day.
  • Roosters coming off the bye: History says the bye can be a blessing or a curse. The Roosters have had two weeks to prepare, but they also haven’t played since Round 4. Rust could be a factor early, and the Sharks – fresh off a convincing win – should hit the ground running.
  • Jesse Ramien’s fitness: The Sharks centre picked up a suspected MCL injury against the Warriors. If he’s out, that’s a big loss to Cronulla’s right edge. Keep an eye on the team list – it could shift the dynamic.
