Two sides desperate for a win, and only one of them has any recent evidence they can actually get one.
Manly’s coaching swap to Kieran Foran paid off spectacularly in Round 5 – a 52-18 demolition of the Dolphins at Redcliffe. Nine tries. Haumole Olakau’atu back to his destructive best. Tom Trbojevic looking dangerous again. That’s the kind of performance that buys a new coach some breathing room.
The Dragons? Still searching. 0-5, shut out 32-0 by the Cowboys last Saturday, and the pressure on Shane Flanagan is mounting fast. They’re averaging just 13.6 points per game over their last five – barely a try and a half per outing. It’s hard to back a team that can’t score.
That said, this isn’t as straightforward as the market suggests. Both these sides have been leaky at the back, and Manly’s Round 5 explosion came against a Dolphins outfit that completely fell apart. Wollongong on a Friday night is a different beast – the Dragons tend to lift at WIN Stadium, and a desperate home crowd could make this tighter than 6.5 points.
| Stat | Dragons | Sea Eagles |
|---|---|---|
| Power Rank | #16 | #15 |
| Form | 0-5 (Cold) | 1-4 (Cold) |
| Points Per Game | 13.6 | 21.0 |
| Conceding Per Game | 29.0 | 35.2 |
| Point Differential | -15.4 | -14.2 |
Here’s where it gets interesting for punters. The market has Manly winning by 6.5 points, but our model only sees a 3-point gap. That’s a meaningful difference when you’re looking at the line.
Manly should win this game – they’ve got more firepower, more confidence after last week, and Tom Trbojevic against the Dragons’ defence is a mismatch. But at -6.5, you’re asking them to put the Dragons away convincingly, and St George have actually kept games competitive even in defeat. Their losses to the Cowboys aside, they’ve generally hung around.
The smarter play might be taking the Dragons on the points. Not because I think they’ll win – I don’t – but because 6.5 is a generous cushion for a side playing at home with nothing left to lose. Back Manly on the H2H if you want the safer option, and consider the Dragons +6.5 if you fancy the margin staying tight.
Sea Eagles to win, but don’t expect a blowout. Two struggling sides with soft defences makes for an unpredictable contest. Back Manly H2H at $1.46 for safety, or take a punt on Dragons +6.5 at $1.90 if you think the home crowd keeps it close.
Manly have more scoring power, more momentum after last week’s rout, and Trbojevic is a nightmare matchup for this Dragons defence. Short price, but the right side.
Our model has this as a 3-point game – well inside the 6.5 spread. Manly’s defence has been just as shaky as the Dragons’, so don’t expect them to run away with it.
