The Cowboys are rolling and Townsville is a fortress right now.

North Queensland have won four of their last five, including that epic 35-31 Friday night shootout against Brisbane in Round 6. That was the kind of game that builds belief – trailing, coming back, refusing to go away. Tom Dearden and Jake Clifford are steering the ship with real confidence, and the forwards are laying a platform every week.

Manly, on the other hand, are in a rough patch. After that monster 52-18 win over the Dolphins in Round 5 – their first game under interim coach Kyle Foran – reality bit back last week with a trip to Wollongong where they beat the Dragons 28-18. Sounds decent on paper, but the Dragons are 0-6 and that game was closer than it should’ve been. Take a wider lens and it’s one win from four, with some ugly scorelines conceded along the way.

The travel factor matters here too. Manly flying to Townsville on a short turnaround for a Thursday night game is no picnic, especially against a side that feeds off its home crowd.

The Numbers (Last 5 Games)

Stat Cowboys Sea Eagles
Power Rank #9 #13
Form 4-1 (Hot) 1-4 (Cold)
Points Per Game 28.2 21.2
Conceding Per Game 23.0 33.6
Point Differential +5.2 -12.4

That defensive column is what jumps out at me. Manly are shipping 33.6 points a game over their last five – that’s woeful by any standard. Against a Cowboys attack that’s humming at 28.2, that’s a recipe for a long night in the tropics.

The form line tells the story pretty clearly: 4-1 versus 1-4. The Cowboys have been competitive in every game this season, while Manly’s only recent win of substance was that Round 5 explosion against the Dolphins – and even that looks less impressive now given where the Dolphins sit.

The line is Cowboys -4.5, but our model has them winning by 11. That’s a 6.5-point gap between what the bookies expect and what the numbers say. At $1.90, you’re getting a fair price on what looks like the more dominant side in every meaningful category.

Look, 60% confidence means I’m not pounding the table here – there’s always a chance Tom Trbojevic decides it’s his night and drags Manly into the contest. But form, stats, and home advantage all point the same direction.

Bottom Line

Cowboys -4.5 at $1.90 is the play. The model has North Queensland winning by 11 and every stat favours the home side – take the Cowboys to cover comfortably in Townsville.

Cowboys are firing at home with four wins from five and an attack averaging 28+ points. Manly are leaking over 33 points a game and travelling to Townsville on a short turnaround – tough ask.

What to Watch

  • Tom Trbojevic factor: When Turbo’s on, Manly can beat anyone. He’s the one bloke who can single-handedly shift this game. If he’s quiet early, the Sea Eagles are in deep trouble up in Townsville.
  • Cowboys’ halves combination: Dearden and Clifford were outstanding in that Broncos win – composed under pressure and pulling the strings. If they get front-foot ball from the pack, they’ll carve up Manly’s porous defence.
  • Manly’s defence under the pump: Conceding 33.6 per game is unsustainable. The Sea Eagles need to find a way to stop the bleeding, but doing that against a red-hot Cowboys attack in Townsville is about as tough as it gets.
