FAQs About Caulfield Heath Races

What is the difference between Caulfield Proper and Caulfield Heath?

Caulfield Heath is the inner track located inside the main course proper. It was designed to allow the Melbourne Racing Club to host more meetings (specifically mid-week and twilight) while preserving the surface of the main track for Group 1 racing.

What is the track bias at Caulfield Heath?

The Heath track is known for being tighter than the main course. It generally favors horses that can settle on-pace or near the lead. Due to the shorter straight and sharp turns, it can be difficult for backmarkers to make up significant ground late.

How long is the straight on the Heath track?

The home straight on the Caulfield Heath track is approximately 300m long, which is significantly shorter than the 367m straight on the Course Proper. This places a premium on cornering ability.

What types of races are held on the Heath?

The Heath primarily hosts mid-week metropolitan meetings and twilight fixtures. While it hosts high-quality racing, the major Group 1 events (like the Caulfield Cup) remain on the Course Proper.

Betting Strategy for Caulfield Heath

  • Respect the Map: Speed maps are critical on the Heath. Look for horses with early tactical speed who can find the rail or the “one-one” position.
  • Barrier Draws Matter: With tight turns, drawing wide can be a death knell unless the horse has elite gate speed to cross the field. Inside draws are generally advantageous.
  • Cornering Ability: Horses that have a history of hanging out or struggling around bends may find the Heath track challenging.
