Friday night in Brisbane. Queensland derby under lights at Suncorp. Doesn’t get much better than this on the NRL calendar.

Both sides come into this one at 3-2 and sitting inside the eight. The Broncos beat the Titans 26-12 last weekend – not flashy, but professional. They overcame some first-half injuries and ground out the result, which is exactly the kind of win that builds a season. Reece Walsh, Ezra Mam and the Broncos backline are starting to find their rhythm.

The Cowboys had the weekend off in terms of degree of difficulty – 32-0 over the winless Dragons – but Jake Clifford has been quietly excellent. Three tries and 15 goals through five rounds, and the Cowboys’ attack is ticking along at 24.8 per game. They’ll fancy themselves here.

The market has this as essentially a coin flip at -1.5, but I reckon Brisbane’s home advantage at Suncorp pushes this wider than the bookies think. The Broncos are a different animal under the Friday night lights in front of their own crowd, and the power ranking gap – 4th versus 13th – suggests the Cowboys are being given a bit too much respect at these odds.

The Numbers (Last 5 Games)

Stat Broncos Cowboys
Power Rank #4 #13
Form 3-2 (Good) 3-2 (Good)
Points Per Game 20.4 24.8
Conceding Per Game 20.8 22.4
Point Differential -0.4 +2.4

What I like about this bet is the price. Broncos -1.5 at $2.10 is essentially asking whether Brisbane will win by more than a converted try at home. Our model says yes – a 4-point margin. That’s tight, but it’s enough, and at odds slightly better than even money it’s a nice position to be in.

North Queensland will be competitive – they always are in derbies – but their form has been padded by a soft draw recently. Beating the winless Dragons by 32 looks great on the scoresheet but doesn’t tell you much about how they’ll handle Brisbane’s forward pack at Suncorp.

This one could go either way in the final 10 minutes. But if you’re picking a side, the Broncos at home with Adam Reynolds steering the ship feels right.

Bottom Line

Broncos -1.5 at $2.10 is the pick. It’s a tight call in a genuine rivalry match, but Brisbane’s Suncorp advantage and the power ranking gap make them the right side at a decent price.

The model sees a 4-point Broncos win where the market has it at 1.5. At $2.10, you’re getting overs on a home side in a rivalry game – good spot to be in.

What to Watch

  • Ezra Mam vs Jake Clifford: Two in-form halves going head-to-head. Mam’s been electric with ball in hand since returning, while Clifford’s combination of tries and goal-kicking has him sitting second on the LeagueUnlimited Player of the Year standings. Whoever controls the game likely wins it.
  • Suncorp atmosphere: Queensland derbies at Suncorp have their own energy. Brisbane are averaging over 43,000 at home this season – the crowd factor is real, and it tends to show up in tight finishes.
  • The Cowboys’ road test: North Queensland’s recent wins have come against the Dragons (0-5) and at home. This is a step up in class and environment. If they can handle Brisbane’s forward pressure early, they’re a genuine chance. If they can’t, it could get away from them in the second half.
