Company Profile

Who are

The Waterhouse name does not need any introduction when the Australian racing and betting industries are discussed. The catalyst for this business is Rob (Robbie) Waterhouse, son of the legendary bookmaker the late Bill Waterhouse, husband of Gai Waterhouse (née Smith, daughter of another Aussie racing legend in Tommy (T. J) Smith), and father of fellow racing pundit and former bookie Tom Waterhouse.

The Waterhouse name has been through the highs and lows of both industries, needless to say, they don’t need repeating here. What is interesting though is the reasoning for jumping into the online betting game when it is in such turmoil, combined with the downturn in the betting market and the cancellation of many of the top sporting codes, including lucrative horse race meetings the world over.

Regardless, we welcome another entrant into the Australian online betting arena, but as you’ll read further down this page, there’s still lots of work to do on the platform.

This platform is licensed by Racing NSW and the NSW Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing. It is also a member of the NSW Bookmakers Co-operative.

It’s unclear at this stage what the management structure of the platform is, other than Rob himself, son Tom and partners, and where their physical offices are.

Contact can only be made through email at this time. The online chat is not operational and there is no phone service either.

Mobile App

Appears to be none at this stage.

Funding Types/Deposit Methods

These include so far: Visa, Mastercard, Bank Transfer, POLi, B-Pay, Cash (via RobWaterhouse’s ANZ account, refer details on the website).

Withdrawal Options

The minimum withdrawal amount is AU$20. Credit Cards (if CC funds are used for deposit purposes, withdrawals will be returned to the CC of origin), EFT, Internet Bank Transfer.

Market/Activity Types caters mostly to racing – both on a local and international scale, plus they have a Sportsbook as well, though it does look a little underdone at this stage, but it’s early days yet for this fledgling operation.

There is a specific section on promotions, but the time of writing, there was nothing available. Again, this is more a case of early days once things really get underway.

Betting Types/Features/Odds

All the usual betting options are available for horse racing:

Win, place
Exotics (quinella, exacta, trifecta, first four.

I didn’t see any Quaddie options, but this may well be a feature for metropolitan meetings on the bigger race days heading deeper into the Spring Carnival.

As for the Sports Book, there is a good selection of sports available for betting on this platform. From the main menu, go to: ‘SPORTS’.

You’ll see all the usual suspects including AFL, NRL, Rugby Union, and the big international sports such as NBA basketball, WTA and ATP tennis tournaments, all the football/soccer leagues, baseball and cricket. There’s something for everyone.

The markets are pretty much stock standard within each sport, such as head-to-heads, win-lose-draw, match result, half time result, under-overs, handicaps etc.

I haven’t done a matchup of how their odds compare with other Australian betting agencies. That’s an exercise for another day.

Other Betting Features

We make a list of all the features we see across most/all online betting agency platforms and check to see if the particular agency being reviewed has them.

Live Racing
Yes, has its own dedicated TV channel – click on the ‘Vision’ icon. However, there are no clear instructions on how it works (the actual pop-up screen that is), nor what coverage is included. Perhaps an additional FAQ page on this would be a good idea.

Featured Bets

Bet Tracker

Speed Map

Form Guide
Yes, on every race card, click on ‘Form’ toward the top of the card. It’s fairly rudimentary without the bells and whistles of say a Ladbrokes, but it’s functional enough.

Responsible Gambling

There is a specific page for this, refer this page.

Customer and Online Help

There is an FAQ section which is found on the main page. This contains some (but not a lot) of information around betting T&C’s, but it’s fairly spartan at this early point in time.
There seems to be a blue Chat widget on the main page (toward the bottom), but it doesn’t appear active at this stage.
At present, the only contactable path for punters is via email:

In Summary

It’s good to see the Waterhouse name back in the betting ring again, but this platform enters the market at a point of uncertainty in Australia’s history. Customer’s dollars are now kept a lot closer to hand due to hardships elsewhere such as lesser employment opportunities, restrictions such as movement and travel. Is there such a thing now as disposable income? Basically, the family dollar is now tied up just trying to survive.

There might be one or two other obstacles this platform has yet to encounter, one of which is punter perception. Many longtime punters have long memories. It’s just as well they are betting on horses and not elephants!

As reiterated above, this platform still feels undercooked in its delivery (particularly around the race card function), and will need to throw some extra resources at it to compete with the well-established brands that have been in the marketplace for some time.

The major problem when reviewing the website was the poor speed encountered. This will need to improve markedly into the future. Also, having a Mobile App is a must. This is the 21st century after all, and most customers will be working off a smartphone, as they do with other betting platforms.

A good start but very much a work-in-progress.
