Who are PlayUp?
Fantasy sports company PlayUp, which has been in operation since October 2011 has made a grand entrance into the Australian wagering industry, buying the bookmaking businesses of Classic Bet, MadBookie and TopBetta as well as the acquisition of Australian fantasy sports platform Draftstars.
PlayUp, a sports betting, fantasy sports and online gaming platform based around cryptocurrency, purchased Draftstars from the Crownbet, Fox Sports and Seven West Media alliance, prior to Crownbet being folded into the Beteasy family.
Following that, PlayUp confirmed its purchase of corporate bookmaker ClassicBet, which now has license approval out of NT upon acquisition.
TopBetta announced last year that it would split its business model; keeping its Global Tote operation, while PlayUp picks up the local betting business, which includes MadBookie which TopBetta acquired in 2017.
See more about these four entities below, under ‘PlayUp Brands’.
PlayUp is moving to utilise a block-chain enabled currency, called PlayChip, across its different platforms.
The acquisition of Draftstars will see PlayUp build on their current Fantasy Sports offering.
“Draftstars is a recognisable daily fantasy sports brand that we will continue to grow and enhance. Over time, the PlayChip will be included within Draftstars as an additional currency”, according to their press release last year.
The move to consolidate ClassicBet, MadBookie and TopBetta gives PlayUp extra traction into the Australian wagering market, and at the same time reduces the number of individual players involved in the industry.
Cryptocurrency is a new offering to customers, with PayChip now sitting alongside NEDS with their Nedscoin currency.
PlayUp owns and operates its innovative Sportsbook, Racebook and Daily Fantasy Sports platforms and has been in operation since October 2011, though the company was founded in 2007. The IT arm of the business, responsible for the development of the PlayUp sports platform, commenced in 2014.
PlayUp’s sports betting platform currently powers its wholly-owned brands; ClassicBet, MadBookie and TopBetta in Australia and New Zealand. These three have joined forces to use the PlayUp technology, which has only recently launched in Australia, making for improved user experience for those coming from those three previous platforms.
PlayUp has established a market-leading position with its Daily Fantasy Sports (DFS) platform both in Australia and India under its newly acquired and renowned Draftstars brand. That’s something most Australian-based bookmakers don’t offer.
As well as catering to punters in Australia and New Zealand, PlayUp has expanded to the US and Indian betting markets.

PlayUp does not permit persons under the age of 18 to hold a betting account.
PlayUp is proud to be one of the few completely Australian owned corporate bookmakers with its offices located in Sydney, NSW.
ClassicBet is a well known corporate Bookmaker who were great supporters and sponsors of Australian country racing, particularly NSW. Formed in 2014 and originally operating under a NSW license until their sale to PlayUp in March 2018. ClassicBet operated under the slogan of a ‘premium betting agency’, and even assigned a personal account manager to customers! Whether this carries through into PlayUp remains to be seen.
MadBookie began operations in 2015, started by a couple of regular Aussie blokes who wanted to build an Australian centric betting platform. Its slice of the pie was small but certainly not insignificant. In 2017, it became part of the TopBetta family though continued to carry its own brand.
TopBetta came to life in 2010 and originally started out as a fantasy wagering business. Their social gaming platform was launched in 2011, becoming their core business for awhile which was soon followed by their bookmaking service, which broadened their business and their customer base. Toward the end of 2015, TopBetta listed on the Australian Stock Exchange as TopBetta Holdings Limited (TBH). In 2017 TBH acquired MadBookie, while the following year, the bookmaking arm of TopBetta was purchased by PlayUp Australia. TBH and its subsidiaries are licensed to operate in the UK and US.
Draftstars, founded in 2016 brought a world leading daily fantasy sports (DFS) platform to Australian customers. Draftstars, prior to its acquisition was a joint venture between CrownBet, Fox Sports, and Seven West Media, and was the Official Daily Fantasy Sports Partner of the AFL. Draftstars will continue to use its own branding, though it is part of the PlayUp family. The fantasy sports model is quite different to the standard online betting model, hence the separation of websites.
Note: with the merger of these three bookmaking platforms into one, it will certainly pay to keep an eye on developments and features being offered through the combined website. Judging by what we have seen so far as a first attempt, we are encouraged that future enhancements and development will make this one of the best sites in Australia.
The PlayUp website design uses a green theme (varies between mint green and kelly green) based on a black background, which is featured across all the various web objects within the site. With many websites now providing a dark theme for their viewers (reduced glare and minimise eyesight issues such as eyestrain), PlayUp have jumped right in, and made their home page very unique when compared to others.
Betting with PlayUp is available on mobile devices. PlayUp has an app for iPhone and Android users, which is essentially a streamlined version of the desktop website. The mobile app is not currently available in the Appstores, you’ll have to download it as an APK file via a link from the PlayUp homepage.Once downloaded, the layout (green on black) looks visually striking! Bets are easily placed thanks to an intuitive mobile design and similar features to other betting sites giving it an air of familiarity.
