The Blues are $1.59 at home in the wet with Cleary back at seven, while Queensland hand a debut to Sam Walker after Tom Dearden’s series-ending injury. Take the safer single at the head and stack the value into a same game multi.

Blues vs Maroons Prediction: Wet Weather Class | State of Origin Game 1

Queensland have a debutant at seven. The Blues have lost their last four Sydney openers. Welcome to Origin. The Blues sit at $1.59, the Maroons at $2.45, and the total points number is parked at 42.5 – bang in the historical Origin range. The market wants New South Wales but does not want to commit on the line.

Wednesday night in Sydney is forecast wet, up to around 10mm in the gauge. That is greasy football, the kind that punishes ambition and rewards the team that wins the wrestle. It is also a brutal opener for a halfback making his Origin debut.

That debutant is Sam Walker. Tom Dearden, last year’s Wally Lewis Medallist, tore his syndesmosis in club football and is gone for the entire series. Walker has Roosters pedigree but one week of Maroons camp, the weight of the jumper and a wet ball to deal with. Munster captains the side and will paper over plenty, but Queensland are also without Reece Walsh after a Round 11 HIA, with Kalyn Ponga recalled at the back.

New South Wales counter with Tedesco at fullback for his 24th Origin, Cleary back at seven and Moses sliding to six. Latrell Mitchell is out and Kotoni Staggs steps into the centres, but the rest of the spine is the combo that took the Blues to a 1-0 lead a year ago. Cleary is one of the league’s standout wet weather halfbacks. That is a meaningful edge on a wet Sydney night.

The risk is the Sydney opener history. The Blues have lost their last four at home in Game 1 and the market is not pricing that hard enough. We still take New South Wales. Better team on paper, missing fewer A-graders, and the conditions tip the kicker advantage toward Cleary. Take the safe single at the head and stack the value into a same game multi.

Blues vs Maroons Tip

NSW win a wet, low-scoring grinder by less than a converted try. Walker’s debut night is too tough an assignment in conditions that take away his strengths and total points stay under 42.5.

Three legs that all live in the same story. A close NSW win is a low-scoring NSW win. A low-scoring NSW win in the wet still gives Cleary’s left edge enough touches to put To’o over once. To’o has scored in three of his last four Origins. Grab the live price at the counter, not from this preview.

Final Verdict

The Blues are the better-resourced team in the better conditions for their best player. The Maroons are asking their captain to carry a debutant in the wet. Take the win at $1.59 as the safer single and stack the value in the multi.
