NRL Preliminary Finals: Tips and Predictions

The preliminary finals were the last week before the Grand Final. Two games, both hosted by a side that won its qualifying final and had a week off, and both hosts lost to a team that had already won two sudden death finals.

Who gets there and how

• Roosters 36 defeated Dolphins 20, Suncorp Stadium, Friday 25 September
• Knights 22 defeated Panthers 14, Accor Stadium, Sunday 27 September

Winning a qualifying final is the single most valuable thing a side can do in this system. It buys a week off, a home preliminary final, and a fresher squad against a team that has played two extra games of finals football.

Who is left

Penrith finished on top and the Dolphins finished third, and both came through their qualifying finals in week one. They have not played since. The Roosters and Newcastle have done it the hard way: the Roosters beat Cronulla 46 to 10 at Allianz and Newcastle won 12 to 10 at Eden Park, and each has now won two sudden death finals.

South Sydney and North Queensland went out in week one. Cronulla and the Warriors went out in the semi finals. The Dolphins and Penrith are now out as well. The Grand Final is Roosters vs Knights at Accor Stadium on Sunday 4 October.

My tips

I had the Roosters winning in Brisbane by 4 and they won by 16, so the winner was right and the margin was short. I had Penrith beating Newcastle by 9 and Newcastle won by 8 with a man down, which was wrong at every end. Both write ups are below, and the Grand Final call is here:
