Knights vs Dolphins Prediction
The Dolphins have not lost in eight and arrive in…

This is a game the team sheets have shaped for both sides. Penrith are without Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin in NSW camp, so Jack Cogger takes the reins, but Souths are hit every bit as hard with Cameron Murray away and Alex Johnston out injured. When both sides lose that much, I come back to the basics. Penrith are at home, they have owned this matchup for years, and they defend better than anyone in the game. That is enough for me to back them to control it and cover.

Both teams are missing their spine, so this comes down to who copes better without their stars. Here is how I read the three things that decide it.
This is the story of the night. Penrith lose Nathan Cleary, Isaah Yeo and Liam Martin to NSW camp, so Jack Cogger runs the show and Lindsay Smith shifts to lock. Souths are hit just as hard though, with Cameron Murray away and Alex Johnston out injured. When both sides are missing that much, I stop looking for who is weakened and start looking at who copes better, and that points me at the home team.
Games like this are decided in the middle and that is Penrith’s strength. They make more metres after contact than Souths and they get more offloads away, so even with a patched spine they can build territory and squeeze. Their defence is the best in the game and it does not lean on the men who are away. On a tight night that platform is what gets them clear of the 4.5.
Both packs like to carry and Penrith have the grunt to punish a Souths side that concedes plenty. Even without Cleary steering them I can see this getting to the Over 45.5, because the Panthers keep coming through the middle and Souths give up too much at the other end. That is the part of the card I am happy to have working alongside the line.
Panthers to win and cover the line at 4.5. I have them clearing that with a bit to spare, because at home and with their defence they are better set up for a scratchy game in Origin week than a Souths side missing just as many big names.
Give me the Panthers. Both sides have been gutted by Origin, but Penrith are the ones at home, they own this fixture, and their defence holds up even when their big names do not. Cogger has enough around him to steer them, and I trust that pack to grind Souths down and get Penrith clear of the 4.5. There are points in their game too, so I am happy to have the total working in my favour. The risk is a patched Penrith attack sputtering and this turning into an arm wrestle, but with Souths just as depleted I will take the home side to have the class that counts.

I have the Panthers. Both teams are missing stars to Origin, but Penrith are at home, they own the recent record in this fixture, and their defence is the best in the game, so I trust them to handle a scrappy night better than Souths.
The Panthers to cover at 4.5 for $1.94. Penrith only have to win by five, and at home against a Souths side missing Cameron Murray and Alex Johnston I have them getting there.
There should be enough in it for me to like the Over 45.5 at $1.90. Both packs are strong and Penrith carry hard, so even in Origin week I expect the points to come.
