The 2026 NRL Grand Final is the Sydney Roosters against the Newcastle Knights at Accor Stadium on Sunday 4 October, kicking off at 7:30pm AEDT. The two clubs have never met in a grand final. It is the Roosters’ first decider since 2019 and Newcastle’s first since 2001.

How the Grand Final works

The Grand Final is the last game of the season, played between the two preliminary final winners. Sudden death, one night, no second chance. It is the one game of the year where the form guide counts for least and preparation, matchups and nerve count for most.

Daylight saving starts in New South Wales on the morning of the game, so the 7:30pm kickoff is Sydney daylight time. That is 6:30pm in Brisbane, 7:00pm in Adelaide and 4:30pm in Perth. The NRLW Grand Final, Roosters v Broncos, is on the same card earlier in the day.

The road to the decider

The Roosters finished fourth with 16 wins from 24, then lost the qualifying final 12-19 to Penrith at CommBank Stadium on Sunday 13 September. From there they beat Cronulla 46-10 at Allianz Stadium on Saturday 19 September and the Dolphins 36-20 at Suncorp Stadium on Friday 25 September. Three finals, 94 points scored, 49 conceded, and nine days between the preliminary final and the decider.

Newcastle Knights

The Knights finished seventh with 14 wins from 24, so every one of their finals was sudden death. They beat South Sydney 20-10 at Allianz Stadium on Friday 11 September, beat the Warriors 12-10 at Eden Park on Sunday 20 September in front of 48,511, the biggest rugby league crowd ever in New Zealand, and beat Penrith 22-14 at Accor Stadium on Sunday 27 September after playing the last 44 minutes with 12 men. Phoenix Crossland was sent off in the 36th minute for the hip drop tackle that broke Nathan Cleary’s ankle, the first send off for a hip drop in NRL history. Three finals, 54 points scored, 34 conceded, and seven days to the decider.

I had the Roosters by 4 in Brisbane and they won by 16, so the winner was right and the margin was short. I had Penrith by 9 and Newcastle won by 8 with a man down, which was wrong at every end. What the history says

Newcastle finished last in 2025 with six wins from 24. Twelve months later they are in a grand final. Since Western Suburbs in 1934, the only other club to play a decider the season after the wooden spoon is the 2010 Roosters, who lost it. No side has won the premiership from seventh, and only two have won it from outside the top four, Brisbane in 1993 and Canterbury in 1995.

The Roosters have won both meetings this year, 38-24 in Round 7 and 23-22 in Round 21, the second of those on a Daly Cherry-Evans field goal in the 77th minute. Trent Robinson has coached three grand finals, in 2013, 2018 and 2019, and won all three. A win on Sunday is the club’s 16th premiership, which breaks a tie with St George on 15 and leaves only South Sydney, on 21, ahead of them. Newcastle’s two premierships came in 1997 and 2001.

The last ten grand finals produced 26, 40, 27, 22, 46, 26, 40, 50, 20 and 48 points. Five of the ten stayed under 40 and the average is 34.5, which is worth knowing before you back a total.
