Big fields everywhere at Wodonga today, and the market keeps shortening the same on-pacers on a Heavy 8. We’re not so sure. When you’ve got 17 and 18 runners on testing ground, a short favourite from a soft lead is doing a lot of work to justify the price. That’s where the crowd piles on, and that’s often where they come unstuck. We’d rather take a few we like at the bigger odds. Bomerton at $5 in the last is one worth a look from back in the field, with the pace likely to run hot up front. Seven races, no standout, just a card where we’re happy to bet against the crowd.

Race 1
12:41pm · 1400m · Mdn Plate · 12 runners

14. You Said What $10.00

Barrier 5 · Midfield · Genuine pace

Big overs here. #14 You Said What is $10 while #1 Forrest Gump is $1.65 to lead from gate 9, and on a Heavy 8 with genuine speed on, that one has to work the whole way. You Said What sits midfield from a softer gate 5, ran second and third coming back before a flat run last time, and the ear muffs go on to help him settle. At ten bucks, I’m happy to take him on.

Race 2
1:16pm · 1100m · Mdn Plate · 11 runners

3. Rip Current $4.50

Barrier 7 · Leader · Soft pace

Nose roll on for the first time and #3 Rip Current can bowl forward from gate 7. The pace looks soft, and that suits a horse that wants to lead, with Mitchell Aitken able to dictate the tempo. #1 Mordu is the $2.50 fav but settles back and has to run him down late. At $4.50 with the speed in my favour, I’m with him.

Race 3
1:51pm · 2050m · Mdn Plate · 12 runners

5. Meka Vibe $4.50

Barrier 1 · Off Pace · No leader

Inside draw is the key. #5 Meka Vibe gets the rail in barrier 1, and with no clear leader he can save ground and grind into it over 2050m on heavy ground. #1 Ate Iron settles back with the same worry but costs you $3 from a wider gate. At $4.50 I’d rather have him.

Race 4
2:31pm · 2050m · Hcp (Bm52) · 12 runners

5. Taupo Tiger $4.80

Barrier 4 · Midfield · No leader

I’m with #5 Taupo Tiger at $4.80. No genuine leader over 2050m lets Dylan Dunn build from gate 4 and run over the top of them late. He keeps finding the line. Happy to take it.

Race 5
3:11pm · 1100m · Hcp (Bm52) · 12 runners

7. Kazotsky $4.40

Barrier 1 · Midfield · Soft pace

No thanks to the fav at $3.70 when it has to burn from gate 11 to lead. #7 Kazotsky gets the rail from barrier 1, won a couple back before a freshen, and finishes hard. $4.40, I’m on.

Race 6
3:46pm · 1300m · Hcp (Bm52) · 12 runners

6. Mishima $5.50

Barrier 1 · Midfield · Soft pace

#6 Mishima at $5.50. Worth more than that to me. He keeps running into the placings without saluting, and the rail in barrier 1 hands him a cheap run. The $5 fav #10 Miss Himalaya sits the same midfield spot from a wider gate, so I’m not taking the shorter price on the same map.

Race 7
4:25pm · 1590m · Hcp (Bm52) · 12 runners

5. Bomerton $5.00

Barrier 5 · Backmarker · Hot pace

Genuine speed up front, perfect for a swooper. #5 Bomerton settles back and McDougall can bring him over the top of them late, while #7 Vegas On Fire has to burn to lead from the inside. At $5 over the $3.10 fav, I’m on.
