The Shaper is the one we keep coming back to in Race 5 at $3.00, but the better value on this card sits further out. It’s a Heavy 10 at Wagga, properly testing ground, so the prices reflect a lot of guesswork from the market. That’s where we like it. Doubtfree at $6.50 in the 2 and Brutal Force at $9 in the 6 are the sort of overs you take on a wet track, while the short ones have to earn it. Seven races, a few we’re keen on, and the value’s in the wet rather than the favourites.

Forecast for Wagga Wagga, New South Wales · WeatherAPI.com · captured 9:54am Sun 21 Jun
Race 1
12:46pm · 1200m · Mdn Plate · 12 runners

2. Distant Stripes $3.30

Barrier 6 · Off Midfield · No leader

Fire Chat at $2.35 has to come from well back in a race with no clear leader, and that’s too short for me. #2 Distant Stripes settles closer from gate 6, has a couple of thirds in his recent runs, and the blinkers go on. He gets the better spot while the fav has the same problem at a worse price. $3.30, on him.

Race 2
1:21pm · 1600m · Mdn (C1) · 11 runners

1. Doubtfree $6.50

Barrier 8 · Midfield · Genuine pace

Winkers on for the first time, and #1 Doubtfree settles midfield where the genuine speed up front sets it up for him. The favourite at $2.50 has to wind up from gate 11 on a heavy 10, and that’s plenty short for one doing it the hard way. Doubtfree’s been knocking on the door with a couple of placings lately. At $6.50, I’m happy to take him over the short one.

Race 3
1:56pm · 1000m · Hcp (Bm58) · 7 runners

1. Scoffa $5.00

Barrier 1 · Leader · Genuine pace

I’m on #1 Scoffa to lead and hang on at $5. Drawn 1 with the blinkers on, he can cross to the front in a race with real speed up front, and the $2.40 favourite has to run him down from a wider gate. Give me the one in control.

Race 4
2:35pm · 1400m · Mdn Hcp · 11 runners

1. Magnus Maximus $4.80

Barrier 2 · Midfield · No leader

$4.80 for #1 Magnus Maximus, and from gate 2 he gets the run that matters. With no genuine leader engaged, Jake Duffy can roll him forward and pinch a soft spot up on the pace. The concussion plates go on for the first time as well. Heart Balm at $3.50 has to come from gate 9 on a Heavy 10, so I’d rather take the bigger price on the one with the cheaper run.

Race 5Best Bet
3:15pm · 1600m · Hcp (Bm82) · 9 runners

3. The Shaper $3.00

Barrier 8 · Midfield · Soft pace

Soft tempo here, and both of these settle midfield, so it comes down to who finishes. #3 The Shaper gets first-time blinkers and a nasal strip with Brodie Loy staying on, and he won three back before a quiet couple. Bon Frankie has the same midfield problem at $4.50, so I’m with The Shaper at $3 to run over the top of them.

Race 6
3:55pm · 1200m · Hcp (Bm58) · 14 runners

7. Brutal Force $9.00

Barrier 8 · Off Pace · No leader

#7 Brutal Force at $9 is overs worth chasing. He’s won two of his last four and charges home late, which is exactly what you want when no one’s keen to lead. He’ll be back from gate 8, but Screen Spirit at $5.50 has to do the work in front while Brutal Force picks them off. Take the swooper.

Race 7
4:30pm · 2000m · Hcp (Bm66) · 9 runners

5. Ziggy Rose $5.50

Barrier 5 · Midfield · No leader

#5 Ziggy Rose steps up to 2000m off a win and gets the trip she wants. No genuine leader, so she can settle midfield and run over the top of them late. At $5.50 against the shorter fav, I’m on.
