Who fancies a Soft 6 country card with a Cup at the end? Four we’re keen on at Swan Hill, and Rainey in the 2400m opener at $5 is where we start. None of our four sit on the speed, so we’re banking on the runs coming late rather than a leader pinching it. Worth a look top to bottom, but the prices we like are mostly tucked in the middle of the card.

Race 1Best Bet
2400m · Mdn Plate · 10 runners

9. Rainey $5.00

Barrier 5 · Midfield · Soft pace

The favourite is $3.60 about a horse that keeps running in the back half of the field. That’s short enough for me. #9 Rainey has improved every start this prep, third last time after a fourth and a fifth. Gate 5, Cian Macredmond rides for Henry Dwyer, and over 2400m on a soft track he’s the one finding the line late. $5, I’m on him.

Race 3
975m · Mdn Plate · 7 runners

2. Codename $6.50

Barrier 5 · Off Pace · No leader

I’m on #2 Codename at $6.50. Nasal strip on first time, cross-over band comes off, and he ran third last start for Brent Stanley. Gate 5, Mitch Aitken rides. No genuine leader is the query, but the favourite has the same problem at $1.70, coming from midfield. Bigger price, gear change, I’ll take it.

Race 6
1600m · Group Hcp (Bm56) · 14 runners

9. Pendante $5.50

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · No leader

Where’s the gamble in race 6? #9 Pendante at $5.50. He and the $4.80 favourite both settle off the speed, and with no clear leader on the favourite has the same problem at a shorter quote. Pendante shows two seconds and a third either side of his last run, and Brittany Button rides for Rod Symons. I’d rather take him.

Race 7
1300m · Hcp (Bm62) · 14 runners

6. Titahi Bay $9.50

Barrier 3 · Off Pace · Genuine pace

Gear change is the hook. #6 Titahi Bay gets the barrier blinkers on first time for Mark Walker, and Joe Bowditch sticks. Drawn 3, he should land closer than usual off pace, and with genuine speed up front the run home into him sets up. The $4.80 favourite has to come from gate 13, which is the carpark in a 14-horse field. At $9.50, I’m on him each-way.
