Spellecast in the opener is the one that jumped off the page when I went through Scone, $3.50 in a no-leader Maiden from gate 4 looks about right. Soft 6 deck, fine overhead, so the track should hold up through the eight races. Four we’re keen on across the card, and the rest can wait. The angle is simple, back the runners who either control the speed map or are clearly the better price against the same problem.

Rain-affected underfoot but dry overhead, so the track should be on the improve through the day.

3. Spellecast $3.50

Barrier 4 · Off Pace · No leader

The blinkers going on is the hook here. #3 Spellecast gets the gear change for David Hatch, and in a six-horse field with no genuine speed, that bit of sharpening matters. He drew gate 4 and Liberty Smyth rides. The favourite is $2.35 and still hasn’t put one away, so I’d rather take $3.50 about the horse with the new gear. Take him.

5. Too Darn Finesse $4.60

Barrier 1 · Midfield · Genuine pace

$4.60 about #5 Too Darn Finesse is the price I want here. He drew the rail, settles midfield, and with genuine speed up front he gets the perfect tow into the race. The favourite is $2.80 from gate 6 off the pace, with placings rather than wins on his recent form. Andrew Gibbons rides for Kris Lees. I’m on the bigger quote.

Race 7
1100m · Hcp (Bm82) · 9 runners

6. Not Written Off $4.40

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · Genuine pace

Take #6 Not Written Off at $4.40. He won the start before his spell, ran second first-up, and gets the second-up race with genuine speed up front. Same map as the fav, but the fav’s $3.80 with just the one win in his last ten. Easy choice.

Race 8
1300m · Hcp (Bm58) · 13 runners

5. Ode So Much $8.00

Barrier 2 · Off Pace · Genuine pace

Why take $3.50 about #4 Jagerschnitzel having to do the work in front through a genuine tempo? I’d rather have #5 Ode So Much at $8. He draws gate 2, settles off them, and with proper speed up front the chasers get the right tow into the race. He’s run a second and a third since the freshen, Olivia Dalton on for Simon Casey. Bigger price, better setup.
