Makdane in race 8 is the one we keep coming back to at Sandown. Drawn 2 in a race with no obvious leader, he can sit off the speed and pounce late on the heavy 8. It’s raining and the ground is testing, so the map matters more than usual. Plenty going on across the nine races, and a few decent prices around him worth a look.

Race 1
1000m · Form Hcp · 7 runners

2. Our Brave Boy $6.00

Barrier 5 · Pace · Soft pace

Norton bit first time, gate 5, and Lachlan Neindorf can put him on speed in a race without much pressure. #2 Our Brave Boy has been knocking on the door with a second either side of a let-up, and over 1000m on a Heavy 8 the on-pacers usually get the gold. The favourite at $2.60 has to come from midfield and chase him down. $6 for Our Brave Boy is the gamble I want.

Race 2
1200m · Hcp (Bm70) · 12 runners

8. Race For Rule $5.50

Barrier 4 · Midfield · Hot pace

Take #8 Race For Rule at $5.50. There’s proper speed up front, and a midfielder from gate 4 is exactly who I want sitting in behind. He’s won his last off two seconds, Billy Egan on for Robbie Griffiths. The fav has to burn petrol crossing from gate 10 with the pace on, no value at $3.90. Give me the one who gets the trail.

Race 3
1600m · Hcp (Bm74) · 9 runners

5. Pula $5.00

Barrier 5 · Off Pace · No leader

Same price as the fav and I’d rather have the in-form one. #5 Pula has won two from his last three, blinkers go on first time, and Lachlan Neindorf rides for Danny O’Brien. In a no-leader race the new gear can push him forward into a better spot. $5, on him.

Race 4
1400m · Exotics Hcp · 10 runners

6. Undisputable $8.00

Barrier 2 · Leader · Soft pace

Where’s the speed in race 4? Off gate 2 with blinkers on, #6 Undisputable dictates. On a Heavy 8 the leader’s golden, and the fav has to wind up from midfield at $2.25. Take him at $8, easy.

Race 5
1400m · > Hcp · 7 runners

7. Grid Girl $4.20

Barrier 5 · Off Pace · Soft pace

#7 Grid Girl. Three straight wins earlier in the prep, second up now, and she runs over the top of them late. $4.20, all over her.

Race 6
1000m · Hcp (Bm84) · 12 runners

10. Bazaball Rewarded $7.00

Barrier 3 · Leader · Genuine pace

The fav’s no good to me at $3.10. From gate 12 and settling off the pace in a Heavy 8 sprint with the speed on, #15 Cicala has too much to do. #10 Bazaball Rewarded gets the rail, tongue tie stays, Mott on, and winning fresh. $7, I’m with him.

Race 7
2400m · Hcp (Bm84) · 9 runners

10. Kurakka $5.50

Barrier 1 · Midfield · No leader

I’m with #10 Kurakka here. From the inside in a race without a clear leader, Beau Mertens can push him forward into the trail and let him finish over the top late. Two thirds and a second from his last three, so the form’s there. The fav at $3 settles further back from gate 6, worse map at a worse price. $5.50, take Kurakka.

1800m · Quayclean Hcp · 8 runners

8. Makdane $3.40

Barrier 2 · Midfield · No leader

Yeah I’m on #8 Makdane. He keeps finding the line. Won three of seven before a spell, came back to win fresh, then ran fifth last start. Gate 2 in a no-leader race, Molly Bourke can park him handy and let the others sort it out late. Sir Atlas at $4.20 sits even further back in a race without much speed. $3.40, best bet.

Race 9
1400m · Hcp (Bm74) · 14 runners

14. Thebelmontgangster $3.50

Barrier 5 · Pace · Soft pace

Trust the Freedmans here. #14 Thebelmontgangster, gate 5, Mott on, and the pace looks soft enough for him to push forward and sit handy. #4 Lovelycut has to come from gate 13. $3.50, easy.
