Soft 5 at Rosehill and the value sits in the staying races, not the sprints. Skycatcher in the 4 at $4.20 is where I want to be, and Portland at $8 in the Cup is the other one I keep coming back to. A few outsiders worth a look further down the card too, Without Parallel and Hezdarnhottoo both hold up at the price. The short ones are short for a reason, so we’re picking our spots.

Race 1

3. Heard Of Him $4.60

Barrier 5 · Off Pace · No leader

Friendly Fire is $1.65 and still trying to win one. That’s short enough for a horse with a placing and a win to show. #3 Heard Of Him gives us $4.60, comes off a win last start, and Ashley Morgan stays on for the Freedmans. Ear muffs go on pre-race, gate 5 in a small field, and with no clear leader he should settle in the right spot off the speed. Take him each-way.

Race 2
1200m · Hcp (Bm72) · 8 runners

4. Zounaka $8.00

Barrier 2 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Take #4 Zounaka. He won fresh last start, draws the rail, and gives us $8 against a $2.25 favourite. The map’s there at gate 2 with Gibbons sticking, and at four times the fav’s price he doesn’t need much to go right. I’m on him.

Race 4Best Bet
2000m · Hcp (Bm78) · 9 runners

10. Skycatcher $4.20

Barrier 3 · Off Pace · No leader

Won last start and ran second the start before, both since the let-up. #10 Skycatcher draws gate 3, Gibbons rides for Mick Price, and the form’s solid. The query is no genuine leader and he settles back, but #5 Nobler at $3.40 has the same problem from gate 2 at a worse price. Over 2000m on a Soft 5, I’d rather have $4.20 on Skycatcher than $3.40 on the favourite with the same map. Take him.

Race 5
1400m · Hcp (Bm72) · 8 runners

8. Ertijaaj $4.80

Barrier 7 · Off Pace · No leader

Ear muffs go on for the first time, and #8 Ertijaaj comes in off back-to-back wins. He gives us $4.80 against $2.90 for #6 Surf’s Up off the same map. All over him.

Race 6
1100m · Hcp (Bm72) · 13 runners

6. Without Parallel $9.00

Barrier 9 · Pace · Soft pace

Soft pace, and #6 Without Parallel is built for it. He can press forward from gate 9 with Adkins, while #16 Gorgeous has to round them up from gate 11 in midfield. At $9 versus $4.50, we get double the quote on the horse with the better map. I’d rather take the gamble.

Race 7
1300m · Hcp (Bm78) · 13 runners

5. Hezdarnhottoo $7.50

Barrier 2 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Where’s the value in race 7? #5 Hezdarnhottoo at $7.50. Drew the rail, won last start, and the favourite settles in the same off-pace spot from gate 6 at $2.90. Easy enough.

Race 8
2400m · Cup (L) · 9 runners

1. Portland $8.00

Barrier 9 · Midfield · Soft pace

#1 Portland at $8. Stayer who just won, lugging bit stays on, and Matthew Smith does his best work over a trip. $2.60 for #7 Thebudgiesmugla is short for a horse with the same off-pace map from a wider gate. Give me Portland.

Race 10
1500m · Hcp (Bm78) · 11 runners

12. Seven’s $4.80

Barrier 4 · Off Pace · No leader

Braith Nock for the Archibalds on #12 Seven’s. Gate 4, ran second last start, and the cross-over nose band stays on third up. The favourite #3 Mawjood drew the carpark at $4.20. At $4.80 with the better draw, she’s the one for me.
