Three we’re keen on at Newcastle, and the rest can wait. Soft 6 with fine weather overhead, so the ground isn’t playing tricks today. Lighthouse Lass in the 5 is where the confidence sits, $3.60 and happy to settle off the pace from gate 6. The other two come later in the day, both at prices that look a touch better than the favourites we’re running into.

10. Lighthouse Lass $3.60

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Ear muffs first time is the hook for me. #10 Lighthouse Lass gets the gear change for the Freedmans, with Keagan Latham aboard from gate 6. The soft pace is the query for a horse that settles back, but the favourite sits back too and gives us $4 for the same problem. Over 1200m on a Soft 6, I’d rather have Lighthouse Lass at $3.60.

6. Glastonbury Girl $4.50

Barrier 5 · Off Midfield · Soft pace

Take on the fav here. $1.90 about a one-start filly doesn’t add up in a soft-tempo 1400m, especially when she settles further back than #6 Glastonbury Girl. Glastonbury placed third and second before her beaten last start, gets a workable gate 5, and Mitch Bell stays on for Matt Smith. At $4.50, I’m on her.

3. Monkhana $5.50

Barrier 4 · Off Pace · No leader

Give me #3 Monkhana at $5.50. Blinkers on first time, drawn 4, Rory Hutchings aboard. Better than taking $4.40 about the fav.
