Quiet little card at Murray Bridge, seven races and only three we’re keen on. Track’s a Soft 6 with plenty of cloud about, so the ground matters but it’s not a bog. Fullheadofsteam in Race 2 is where we start. Drawn 3 in a 1100m field of 12 with no clear leader, and $6.50 looks a fair price for a horse that can find the front. The other two are longer shots at the trip, so this is a day to be picky rather than swing at everything.

Where’s the speed in this? Nobody’s grabbing it, and that’s exactly why I’m on #4 Fullheadofsteam. He rolls forward from gate 3 and can dictate his own terms up front. The fav #3 Elrond is $2.50 sitting back in the midfield, needing this to fall apart. I’d rather have the horse making the running at $6.50. Take him.

The favourite has a real problem here: #3 Frontpoint drew the outside in 16 and has to burn petrol just to cross a big field. #5 Allegedly slots in from gate 8, sits just off midfield, and with no genuine tempo he can time his run and get over the top of them late. At $7.50 against the fav’s $4.80, I know which one I want. On him to win.

$5 on #12 Fiabesca is the sort of price I want here. With no genuine leader, the fav #9 Suit Of Wands has to close from the worse gate at $4.80, the same problem as mine but at a shorter quote. Fiabesca draws kinder from gate 9 and knows how to finish off late. I’m with him.
