So where’s the value at Morphettville today? It’s a Soft 7 and fine overhead, so nothing too tricky underfoot, but these are big fields, and the last three we like all come out of 17, 19 and 18 runners. That’s a lot of traffic to beat, which is why we’ve leaned to horses that can settle off the pace and come at them late rather than fight for early spots. Five we’re keen on across the card, and none of them are short. Zoutrail and Affaire Vue sit at $4.80, with a bit more on the rest, so there’s a few we like without a standout among them.

No genuine leader here, so I want one that finishes over the top of them, and #4 Tassoro does exactly that. He ran on last start and found the line for second the run before, so he knows how to get home late. The fav, #14 Contrary, has the same need to close at $4, only from further back. Holder sticks, and gate 8 is fine with no speed on. At $8, I’m on him.

The favourite leads at $2.45, and with genuine speed on he’s got to grind to hold them off. #4 Mr Vexatious settles midfield from gate 4, ran third earlier in his prep, and gets the tempo to sweep home late. Metcalfe stays put. At $7.50, I’d rather take the swooper than the short one doing the donkey work in front.

I’m on #11 Zoutrail at $4.80. Genuine speed up front means he can sit off it from gate 4 and pounce late, and he’s placed in two of his last three. The Magistrate has to burn from gate 11 out wide just to lead. Easy.

Where’s the value in the last? #14 Magic Island at $6. It’s a no-leader sprint, so nobody pinches an easy lead and it turns into a race for the line. The favourite, #3 Garcon Renard, has to unwind from gate 10 at $3.50, and Magic Island has the same closing job but from a cleaner draw in gate 5 with Taylor Johnstone staying on. Give me the bigger price and the better gate.
