The Gold Cup gets all the noise at Mackay, but that is not where we are keen today. It is a Good 4 and fine overhead, so the track is not the story, the map and the price are. Both races we like have no clear leader, which means the run of the race is up for grabs. We keep coming back to $5.50 on Ten Carat Lucy in race 5, drawn 4 and happy to settle midfield. Keitel is the other one, back in the field over 2000m in race 7, the type who gets going late once the speed folds up. Two worth a look on a card where the crowd is looking further up the page.

7. Ten Carat Lucy $5.50

Barrier 4 · Midfield · No leader

#7 Ten Carat Lucy keeps knocking on the door, second after second, and now draws gate 4 with the tongue tie going on. No genuine leader here, so she’ll sit closer to the speed from midfield than the favourite does. #3 Black Eyed Blonde is $1.45 stuck off pace behind the same problem, and I won’t take that. Give me the $5.50.

1. Keitel $3.40

Barrier 6 · Backmarker · No leader

#1 Keitel won last start and Ryan Wiggins stays on for Vandyke. No genuine leader means a backmarker has to come home over the top of them, and Keitel’s got the finish to do it. The danger #2 Quothquan sits just as far back but from gate 11, a worse spot. At $3.40, I’m happy to have it.
