$3.70 on Determination in Race 5 is the one we keep coming back to at Mackay. The track’s a Soft 5 under cloud, so nothing too tricky underfoot, but the pace looks soft in that race and Determination settles off it from gate 2. That’s a horse that can pick its moment rather than burn up early. Only three we’re keen on across the card. Dub Stepping in the opener at $7 is worth a look from a small field, and Innovader can do some late work in the second. But the value sits with Determination. Same price, better spot, and we like where she lands.

Taking $1.50 on the favourite in a six-horse sprint isn’t for me. There’s genuine speed up front, which sets it up for something coming from off them. #3 Dub Stepping draws gate 5, has a couple of wins in this prep, and Ben Kennedy stays on. The fav has to do the work in front. At $7, I’d rather chance Dub Stepping running over the top of them late.

Winkers on and the ear muffs for the score-up, that’s the gear change I’m chasing. #3 Innovader settles off the speed, but so does the $1.50 favourite, so I’m not taking odds-on for a horse with the same map worry. Innovader draws gate 4, Christopher McIver stays on, and at $5.50 I’m happy to be with him instead.

I’m on #5 Determination to win at $3.70. Gate 2 gives him the inside, he’s been finding the line all prep, and from just off the speed he can pick off the leaders late. The favourite kicks up front at $2.70, but on a soft track I’d back the horse coming home over the top of them. Best bet, on him.
