Nine races at Launceston and just three we’re keen on. Thin card, but that only means we’re picking our spots instead of forcing a bet in every race. Good 4 under cloud, so there’s enough give in the ground to matter over the short trips. In Race 6 they’ll go hard early, and that suits Geegees Mercedes settling back at $5, even from gate 10.

They’ll go hard early here, and that plays right into #6 Geegees Mercedes’ hands. She’s run second at each of her past two, and a mare settling back needs a race truly run to have something to chase. Gate 10 means she’ll be wide, but I’d rather that than $3.40 on #7 Miss Lyra, who has to burn petrol to hold the front from the inside. $5 for Geegees Mercedes, happy to take it.

I’m on #2 Benefitsofmine at $4.00. He won last start, and that’s two wins from his last three, so the timing is right. Blinkers stay on, and from gate 4 in a field of seven he won’t get buried anywhere. #1 Ozonica at $2.45 looks short to me for a horse that has to lead and hold on. That price difference is the whole argument.

Two wins from his last four, and #2 Merlin Beach gets gate 5 with Anthony Darmanin staying on. #3 Johnnie Pinch will be the one in front from gate 2, but one placing from his last five isn’t enough for me at $3.30. I’d rather have Merlin Beach at $3, and to win, not each-way.
