Three we like at Kalgoorlie and the prices are where it gets interesting. Lanta in the opener at $4.60 is the one we’re keenest on, off the pace from gate 2 in a race with no obvious leader. The bigger price we like is Couldabeenahandbag in Race 3 at double figures, looks too long for what she brings. Soft 6 with more showers about, so the going could shift again before R1.

3. Lanta $4.60

Barrier 2 · Off Pace · No leader

No clear leader, off pace trip from gate 2, on a soft track.

Race 3
1200m · Hcp (C2) · 7 runners

5. Couldabeenahandbag $10.00

Barrier 3 · Off Pace · No leader

$1.28 on #1 Call Me Frosty is too short for me in a no-leader race where he has to do the work from gate 5. #5 Couldabeenahandbag drops back to a winnable C2, gate 3, blinkers stay on, and Tapper has him knocking on the door again. At $10 in a seven-horse field, I’m happy to take the overs and let the fav try to win one in front by himself.

Race 5
1300m · Chile (70+) · 9 runners

2. Close At Hand $7.00

Barrier 7 · Midfield · Genuine pace

I’m with #2 Close At Hand. He just won, ran third the run before, and was winning either side of the let-up too. Genuine pace on, so from gate 7 he gets cover into the race and a clear shot late. $7 against $2.70 on the fav is the kind of overs I’m taking.
