Fine day at Ipswich and the track’s a Soft 5, which is about as good as it gets up there this time of year. Eight races on the card, five we’re keen on. What jumps out is how few of these races have a clear leader, so the off-pace horses should get every chance to roll home. Breezin’ in race 7 is the one we like best.

Ear muffs come off for the first time, often a sign the stable wants a sharper run. #5 Boomtown Laddie draws gate 2, ran second two back, and at $5 he’s the better gamble than the $2.50 favourite. Under Arrest is also midfield from gate 6, so he has the same map problem at less than half the price. I’m with Boomtown Laddie.

$1.80 about a horse with only one run on the board is short enough for me. #7 Lady Milan gets the rail, Gollan trains, Moor rides, and she ran second last start. $5.50, take her.

I’m on #1 Braveheart at $4. Three placings in his last four, gate 2 in a no-leader race, and the favourite has the same off-pace map at $2. No thanks.

6. Bee Exact $4.80

The rail draw is where I want to be in this one. #6 Bee Exact gets gate 1 with no clear leader, so he can park himself close from off the pace. He won two back and ran fourth last start, so he’s running into form. The favourite is drawn just outside but settles right at the back, which is the wrong shape at $3.20. Bee Exact at $4.80 gives us the better seat and the bigger quote. Take him.

On board with #11 Breezin’ at $3.60. Won three back, ran fourth last time, and placings to either side say he’s been holding form right through this prep. The no-leader shape is the query, but the favourite has the same off-pace map at $3.90 from a wider gate. Breezin’ gets gate 5 with Jaden Lloyd staying on. He’s the better one to take.
