Fine day at Grafton on a Good 4, so no excuses in the going. For us the interest is all in the prices. Band Of Brothers is the shortest of our tips at $6.50 in Race 7, and everything else we like sits out at $8 or longer. That’s where the value looks to me. Winning Point at $8, Deep Stealth and Launcher both out to $10, and Barcelona Express at $8.50 in the last. Five we’re keen on across the eight races, and not one short enough to scare us off. Happy to take the bigger odds where the horse still reads well.

Race 3
1:39pm · 2200m · Plate (C6) · 10 runners

12. Winning Point $8.00

Barrier 5 · Midfield · No leader

The favourite is $1.65 and hasn’t been winning either, so that’s short enough for me to take on. #12 Winning Point draws to sit midfield in a race with no clear leader, so he won’t get too far back and can pick up the pieces late. Jean Van Overmeire from gate 5 gives him every chance. At $8, I’d rather have him than odds-on on a horse doing nothing special.

Race 4
2:14pm · 1100m · Hcp (C2) · 13 runners

8. Deep Stealth $10.00

Barrier 7 · Midfield · Hot pace

They’ll go hard up front here, and that’s exactly when I want a horse who can pick them off late. #8 Deep Stealth settles midfield and keeps hitting the line, a win and two seconds across his last three. Storm Merchant has to do it all in front at $1.70 into a hot tempo, which is where a leader gets found out. At $10, I’m happy to take the swooper.

Race 5
2:49pm · 1600m · Hcp (C2) · 11 runners

8. Launcher $10.00

Barrier 7 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Pacifiers off for the first time, and that can spark #8 Launcher up. He gets back early but comes home hard, and with no genuine speed on he’s the type to pick them off late. #5 Vixenette has to do it all from midfield herself, so $2.30 is no thanks. At $10, I’m on.

Race 7
3:59pm · 1200m · Hcp (L) · 16 runners

6. Band Of Brothers $6.50

Barrier 7 · Leader · Genuine pace

Genuine speed on, gate 7, winkers first time. #6 Band Of Brothers loves to bowl along and keeps finding the line, a couple of wins and placings through his recent runs. The favourite, #3 Givemethebeatboys, has to chase from wider at $4.80 and give him a start. Give me the leader at $6.50.

Race 8
4:34pm · 1400m · (Bm58) Hcp · 11 runners

4. Barcelona Express $8.50

Barrier 8 · Off Pace · No leader

Where’s the value in race 8? #4 Barcelona Express at $8.50. He’s kept knocking on the door with a couple of thirds lately, and though he settles off them, he comes home hard and picks them off late once the sprint is on. There’s no genuine leader here, so I’d sooner chase that price than take $2.35 on #3 Autumn Miss up front. I’m on.
