Grafton looks a tidy little card to me. Soft 6 underfoot, fine overhead, and no real surprises with the going. The Ulmarra Hotel Cup in race 6 is the headline, twenty in the field and Enhance at $6.50 catching the eye. Gaylord in the 4 is where I’m strongest, drawn 3 and a fair price at $3.10.

Race 1
1635m · Mdn Hcp · 10 runners

10. Virginia Breezes $6.00

Barrier 4 · Midfield · Genuine pace

$2.60 about the favourite is too short for me here. Foxy Artist keeps running thirds without putting one away, draws gate 8, and has to do work to find a spot in the run. #10 Virginia Breezes gets the better gate at 4, goes on with the blinkers, and ran a clean second at her last start. Archie McColm sticks for Leo Clapham. At $6 with the better draw and a horse trending the right way, I’m on her.

Race 2
2245m · Plate (C1) · 8 runners

1. Divine Effort $5.50

Barrier 3 · Midfield · No leader

Take #1 Divine Effort at $5.50. No genuine leader here, but gate 3 lets him find his spot, while Tormanzor faces the same problem from gate 7 at $1.95. Grace Palmer rides with the tongue tie. No thanks to the short one.

Race 3
2245m · Hcp (Bm74) · 8 runners

5. Rock The Machine $6.00

Barrier 3 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Where’s the value in race 3? With no real speed and #2 Yukanuma getting back from gate 1 at $2.50, the fav has the same problem as everyone else. #5 Rock The Machine has won twice already this prep, gets gate 3, and Justin Stanley rides for Cathy Chapman. I’d rather take $6 about the runner with the same problem.

Race 4Best Bet
1030m · Hcp (C3) · 11 runners

1. Gaylord $3.10

Barrier 3 · Midfield · Hot pace

Three on the bounce as the runner-up and #1 Gaylord is knocking on the door. Hot tempo over 1030m, gate 3, Nick Heywood on for Matthew Dunn, cross-over nose band stays on. Prestige Pak has to burn from gate 4 to lead, which is the race shape that suits Gaylord running through them. $3.10, on him.

Race 6
1205m · Hcp (Bm58) · 14 runners

7. Enhance $6.50

Barrier 6 · Midfield · Genuine pace

The tongue control bit goes on for the first time and #7 Enhance ran third last start. Genuine speed means the fav has to burn from gate 7 while Enhance gets to come at them from gate 6. At $6.50 he’s too good to leave out.

Race 7
1435m · Hcp (Bm58) · 11 runners

8. Super Jaie $6.00

Barrier 4 · Off Pace · No leader

Donna Grisedale trains, Jon Grisedale rides, and #8 Super Jaie has the winkers on from gate 4 at $6. He won earlier this prep and ran third two starts back. The fav Lofty Macsporran has to come from even further back out of gate 7 at $2.80. I’d rather take the bigger price about the cleaner run.
