Soft 5 at the Gold Coast and the prices are doing the talking today, not the favourites. We’ve got five worth a look across the card, and most of the value sits with the ones coming from off the pace. Fire Bomber is the shortest of ours at $3.50 in Race 6, and we’re happy on him, but the better overs are further out. The $9 on Five Of Us in the opener and the $8 on Count Nicholas in Race 5 are where it pays if you like a roughie. No standout here, just a few we like at prices that read well.

Race 1
4:15pm · 1800m · Mdn Plate · 7 runners

11. Five Of Us $9.00

Barrier 7 · Midfield · No leader

No clear leader, midfield trip from gate 7, on a soft track.

Race 4
6:05pm · 1000m · Hcp (C4) · 6 runners

7. Hi Tiago $4.20

Barrier 5 · Off Pace · No leader

Hot Wings at $2.40 is short enough here. In a six-horse field with no genuine leader, the fav has to make his own luck from midfield like everyone else. #7 Hi Tiago settles a touch further back, but he comes home strong and gets Karl Zechner aboard. Drawn 5, off a second last start, and at $4.20 I’d rather have the bigger price on a horse with the same job. On him.

Race 5
6:41pm · 1200m · Hcp (Bm70) · 9 runners

5. Count Nicholas $8.00

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · No leader

#5 Count Nicholas keeps hitting the board, a win plus a stack of seconds and thirds through his recent runs, and he’s $8. With no genuine leader he can drop in off them from gate 6 and pick them off late, Karl Zechner staying on. The $2.50 fav has the same back-off-them shape from the inside for a quarter of the price. Easy call to take the eight.

Race 6
7:13pm · 1400m · Hcp (Bm65) · 10 runners

2. Fire Bomber $3.50

Barrier 3 · Off Pace · No leader

Blinkers on and #2 Fire Bomber gets my vote. He won first up off the spell, Kyle Wilson-Taylor sticks, and from gate 3 he settles off them. In a no-leader race he can run over the top of them late, and at $3.50 I’d rather have him than the $3.30 fav doing the work up front.

Race 8
8:21pm · 1800m · Hcp (Bm65) · 7 runners

1. Kiroro Peak $5.50

Barrier 3 · Midfield · Soft pace

$5.50 for #1 Kiroro Peak is the kind of overs I’m chasing here. The fav sits off them too from the rail, so I’m not keen on $2.60 for #3 Stranglehold with the same back-off-them shape. Kiroro Peak draws 3, gets the winkers on, and comes home hard enough to pick them off late. $5.50, and I’m with him.
