Good 4 at the Gold Coast and fine overhead, so no wet-track excuses today. This is honest ground, and that means the form should hold up rather than get turned upside down. When the track is fair like this, the value stops coming from chaos and starts coming from the map and the price. That is where we have been looking. Far Beyond in Race 5 is the one we keep coming back to at $7. 10 runners, so he needs the speed to be on up front, but the genuine tempo looks likely and the price is worth a look. Five races we are keen on across the eight, a couple of short ones and one at each-way odds. Pick your spots.

#8 Sarah’s Sonnets won her last two before a spell and came back with a third, so she’s racing up to the mark. Off the rail in barrier 1, Frederick Larson can slot her into a midfield trip and save ground in a genuinely run race. At $3.50 she’s shorter than Old Song out in barrier 7, but I’d rather the one drawn to get the cheap run. Sticking with her.

The favourite has to lead all the way at $2.90, and over a sharp 1000m with genuine speed engaged, that’s a big ask from in front. #7 Far Beyond gets to swoop late from off the pace, drew nicely in barrier 3, and won a couple back before boxing on. At $7 to run over the top of them, I’m on him.

Gollan pulls the blinkers and the norton bit for the first time, and that gear coming off often sharpens one up late. #9 Exuberance settles back from gate 4 and gets a genuine tempo to chase over a sharp 1000m. At $3.20 he’s under the fav’s $3.80, and I’d rather the one swooping into a fast-run race than the horse sitting on the speed. Happy to take him.
