Decalogue at $3.20 in the 2 is the shortest one we’re keen on all day, and even that isn’t skinny for the best bet on the card. It’s a Heavy 8 at Flemington with showers about, so they’re racing on testing ground and the leaders won’t have it easy. A lot of these races have no clear leader, which is why we keep landing on horses that can sit off the speed and run over the top of them. That’s where the value is too. Most of our list is overs, with $7 for Bold Soul in the 3, $10 on Madero in the 5, and $6 for Jimmy The Bear in the 8. Short one we trust early, then we go price hunting late.

2. Portarlington $5.00

Barrier 1 · Midfield · Genuine pace

Same $5 as the favourite, but I know which gate I’d rather have. #2 Portarlington draws the rail while Star Of Macedon has to work across from out wide in 14. Blinkers go on for Craig Williams, he’s been placed at his last two, and on a Heavy 8 with genuine speed up front he gets the softer run closer in. I’m on him.

1. Decalogue $3.20

Barrier 7 · Off Pace · No leader

Won his last two and the cross-over nose band stays on, so #1 Decalogue is racing into this at the right time. No genuine leader is the query when he settles back, but he’s got the late kick to run over the top of them, and on heavy ground that strength through the line matters. Ciaron Maher has him flying, gate 7 is fine, and $3.20 is plenty. He’s the one to win.

Race 3
1:00pm · 2540m · Trophy Hcp · 13 runners

1. Bold Soul $7.00

Barrier 7 · Off Midfield · No leader

This one’s all about the map. No genuine leader over 2540m, so #1 Bold Soul settles closer from gate 7 while the favourite has to creep up from 13. Both $7, Billy Egan for Patrick Payne, and I’d rather have the better seat. Take him.

Race 4
1:35pm · 1100m · Johnson Hcp · 11 runners

4. Choir Point $4.00

Barrier 6 · Midfield · Hot pace

Hot speed up front, and that’s exactly where the favourite wants to be. #9 Prestar has to burn to hold the lead from gate 8, and at $4.20 I’d rather be the one picking up the pieces behind it. #4 Choir Point sits midfield off that tempo, he’s won three of his last six, and Luke Cartwright only has to creep him into a tiring race. $4, all over him.

Race 5
2:10pm · 1420m · Hcp (Bm84) · 14 runners

3. Madero $10.00

Barrier 2 · Midfield · Hot pace

Winkers, lugging bit and a cross-over nose band, all on for the first time. The Hayes yard clearly wants #3 Madero firing fresh, and at $10 I’m happy to chance it. He draws gate 2 and sits midfield off a hot tempo, while the $2.25 favourite has to wind up from the back in a race that should burn early. He’s got a win and a couple of placings in him, and he gets the gun run. Each-way at $10.

Race 6
2:45pm · 1420m · Hcp (Bm90) · 13 runners

8. First Chorus $4.00

Barrier 7 · Pace · No leader

Where’s the value in race 6? #8 First Chorus at $4. No genuine leader, so he can roll forward from gate 7 and dictate, Jamie Mott aboard and coming off a win. The favourite has to cross from 13 and isn’t any bigger at $4.40. Have it.

Race 7
3:25pm · 1100m · Beattie Hcp · 12 runners

6. De Bergerac $4.40

Barrier 2 · Off Midfield · Soft pace

The favourite’s no good to me at $4.20, settling last from gate 11 with no early speed to drag it into the race. #6 De Bergerac sits closer from gate 2 and pays $4.40 for the better seat. I’m with him.

Race 8
4:00pm · 1620m · Bourke Hcp · 11 runners

2. Jimmy The Bear $6.00

Barrier 1 · Off Midfield · No leader

#2 Jimmy The Bear. Six bucks. Easy. He gets the rail, blinkers go on, and he won last start, while the fav’s stuck out wide in gate 11. Love it at $6.

Race 9
4:35pm · 1620m · Trophy Hcp · 10 runners

2. Kaleo $5.50

Barrier 7 · Off Midfield · No leader

I’m with #2 Kaleo at $5.50. He broke through last start after a couple of seconds, blinkers stay on for Ciaron Maher, and from gate 7 he settles closer than the $2.90 favourite, a backmarker with the same need for luck in a no-leader race. Better seat, bigger price.
