Plenty of short ones sitting at the top of these markets, and we reckon a couple of them are getting more love than they’re worth. The track’s a Soft 5 and a few of these races have no clear leader, so the runners that can drop in behind the speed and pounce late are the ones we keep coming back to. That’s where it pays for us, from August Joe at $5 in the 2 through to Diddley Squat at $8.50 in the 5. None of them are giveaways, but the prices read better than the favourites doing the same job.

No genuine leader here, and both these come from off the speed. The difference is the price. #8 Shemakesmenervous is $1.95 and still has to round them up from the same spot as everyone else. #3 August Joe plays the same hand but quickens late when it matters, and at $5 with Tom Orr aboard, the tongue control bit on and a win not long back, I’d rather take the bigger price. He picks them off late.

5. Lunar Eight $4.80

Genuine speed up front, and that’s the setup a closer wants. #5 Lunar Eight gets a soft run from gate 3 with the nose roll on, and the $3.60 favourite, #7 Smashing Rosie, has to come from even further back. The hot tempo brings him right into it, so I’d sooner take $4.80 and the bigger price. On him.

11. Silent Angel $6.00
Barrier 7 · Off Pace · No leader
Hard to take $2 on #5 Too Many Kisses when she’s no certainty to find the front and settles midfield anyway. #11 Silent Angel keeps running into the placings, and with no genuine leader this becomes a test of who finishes hardest. He gets back, but he runs over the top of them late. At $6, I’m happy to take the bigger price and let him pick the race up.

4. Diddley Squat $8.50
Barrier 1 · Off Pace · Genuine pace
Cross-over nose band on, #4 Diddley Squat draws the rail, and genuine speed up front sets it up for a swooper to come over the top. At $8.50 against the $1.65 fav doing all the work, I’m on the each-way.
