Fine day at Eagle Farm and the track’s come up a Soft 5, so no excuses there. The money’s all piling onto the short ones early, plenty of $3 favourites dotted through the card. We’re happy to take them on. The one we keep coming back to is 9 runners than a horse sitting midfield deserves to be. Where’s the value? Not on the odds-on brigade today, that’s for sure.

Blinkers go on and #4 Dust Cloud can bowl along in front. With no genuine tempo, a leader gets an easy time of it, and that’s the map I want. He ran second last start, Ben Thompson stays on for Tony Gollan, and from gate 7 he’s got the gate speed to cross and control it. At $3.10, I’m happy to be with him.

#1 Teelg is second-up off a win, and before the spell he kept running second every time. That form cycle at $5.50 is what I want. He gets the fence in barrier 3, and Boris Thornton can settle him one off the speed and let him pick them up late. #7 Stein has the early dash, but at $3.20 he’s too short for me, and I’d sooner be on the one finishing over the top of them. $5.50, on him.

No genuine leader, and #7 Fragile Love draws to land closer than usual from gate 2. Blinkers on first-up, ran second before the spell, Thompson aboard for Gollan. $3.70, I’m on.

I’m sticking with #2 Valorous Power here. He gets the rail, and over 1800m with no genuine leader he can save the ground while the rest go searching for the front. Tongue tie on, Ben Osmond rides for Kris Lees, and he was back running fourth last time out. Take him at $3.60.
