Heavy 8 at Dubbo and the market keeps backing the short ones in these big fields, but that’s where I reckon they’ve got it wrong today. field 12 runners and the punters are all over the favourites, yet Russian Ember at $10 maps to sit handy on the pace and gets right into the race. field 14 runners is the one I keep coming back to while everyone piles onto the top of the market. No standout we’re prepared to call the bet of the day, but a few we’re keen on at prices the wet ground might just bring back to us.

Yeah I’m on #2 Jasper’s Way. He keeps hitting the line, a swag of recent thirds with a win mixed in, the type that’s ready to break through. Gate 5 with Nick Palmer means he settles midfield and gets a clean crack at them over 2200m on a heavy 8. With genuine speed up front, he gets dragged into the race at the right time. $3.60, I like him.

No genuine leader, and #8 Flee With Me draws the rail to settle closer than most of them. The favourite is six lengths back from gate 2, so I don’t want $3.10 on #4 Miss Peony with further to make up. Flee With Me ran second last start, gets the inside trip on a heavy 8, and pays $4. That’s the better gamble.

#2 Media Spin is the favourite at $2.35, but he has to come from gate 12 in a race with no speed, and that’s no good to me. #3 Panelli draws the rail, gets to roll forward in front, and pays $3.90. Take him.

8. Lightning Speed $4.80

#8 Lightning Speed gets the gift here. No one’s going for the lead, so he can stride forward from gate 4 and run his own race on a heavy 8. He won last start and Fawke stays on. Blacklist, the $3.50 fav, has to make up ground from the back in a race with no pace to chase. Give me the horse that controls it at $4.80.

Genuine speed up front, but #3 Glowing Rapids has the early dash to cross from gate 7 and lead them up anyway. On a heavy 8 that’s where I want to be. He won not long ago and keeps hitting the placings. I’d sooner have the leader at $3.90 than take $2.50 on Bolo Miss needing to wind up from midfield.

Ten bucks for #9 Russian Ember is the kind of overs I’m chasing. He’s been placing his last three, sits on the speed from gate 7, and the soft tempo lets him roll forward and dictate on the heavy 8. At $10 against a $2.60 fav, I’m happy to take him.

Winkers on #5 Quick Sharp is the hook. With genuine speed up front, a hold-up horse gets dragged into it late on a heavy 8. He’s got a win and a third in his recent runs, and from gate 9 he can swoop over the top while the $3.50 fav has to do all the work in front. $7, I’m on him.
