Where’s the value at Doomben when the track’s only a Soft 6 and the rain has stayed away? That’s the question today, and we landed on five we’re keen on across the eight races. Better Not Slip in the 8 is the one we love, drawn 2 with a midfield run and a tidy $6 in the market. Fine overhead so the going shouldn’t get any worse, which means the map still matters more than the bias. We’re happy to take on a few of the short ones here, but only where the price gives us a real reason.

Blinkers go on for the first time and that’s the hook. #4 Hopeful Cause has been creeping closer each run, sixth then fourth then third, so he’s knocking on the door now. From gate 6 Brandon Lerena can land him midfield and let him pick them off late. The favourite is $2 and still hasn’t worked out how to win one. At $5.50 I’d rather take the horse trending the right way. On him.

The favourite’s no good to me at $2. Braveheart settles back off the speed like everything else, and on a soft track in a small field I’m not taking even money on one that has to come and get them. #4 Thankyou Henry sits in the same part of the race at $9.50, draws gate 7, gets the blinkers and nose band on, and Boris Thornton rides. Same problem, way bigger quote. On him each-way.

Blinkers go on for #8 Esprit Du Jour, and there’s genuine speed up front, which is exactly the tempo he wants rolling forward. Three seconds, a win, then a third before a flat fourth last time, he keeps finding the line. At $6 I’d rather have him than take $3.60 on the fav coming from midfield. On him to win.
