Doomben Horse Racing Tips Sat 18/7/26

Doomben’s dried out to a Soft 5 under a fine sky, and the market’s leaning hard on the short ones today. Tengun Tommy at $1.75 in the opener is short, but he’s won his last two and he’s on our card to win. Where we’re keen at a price is Contilda’s Love in Race 2, a backmarker drawn 1 at $6, and that’s the one we love. There’s a 21-horse field to sort through in Race 4 as well, so we’ll pick our spots and let the crowd chase the favourites.

Race 1
11:58am · 1200m · Handicap · 9 runners

1. Tengun Tommy $1.75

Barrier 9 · Midfield · Soft pace

#1 Tengun Tommy is the one for me here. Won his last two, comes back off a freshen for Tony Gollan, and Ben Thompson stays on. Gate 9 means he’ll have to work across early or take a spot midfield, but he’s racing too well to hold that against him. The favourite sits back in the same part of the race off the fence. At $1.75 he’s short, but I’m sticking with the horse in form.

Race 2Best Bet
12:33pm · 1350m · Handicap · 9 runners

7. Contilda’s Love $6.00

Barrier 1 · Backmarker · Soft pace

The favourite’s no good to me here. #6 Moonan Quartz is $2.60 and has to work from a wide gate, while #7 Contilda’s Love draws the rail and knows how to run over the top of them even in a soft-run race. Two wins this prep say the class is there, Taylor Marshall stays on, and $6 from gate 1 is where I’m at. Best bet, to win.

Race 3
1:08pm · 1200m · Handicap · 11 runners

5. Fire Bomber $4.40

Barrier 2 · Off Pace · Genuine pace

Blinkers on #5 Fire Bomber, and from gate 2 he gets a soft run just off what looks genuine speed up front. He ran second last start, Jake Bayliss stays put, and $4.40 is overs against the favourite trying to win four on the bounce at $3.30. Happy to back him each-way.

Race 4
1:43pm · 2020m · Handicap · 15 runners

16. Techna $4.20

Barrier 2 · Off Midfield · Soft pace

Won last start, drawn 2, Robbie Dolan sticks. #16 Techna gets a soft run just off the speed here, and $4.20 is fair for a horse peaking at the right time. Easy.

Race 5
2:18pm · 1200m · Handicap · 12 runners

5. Spirit Of Barty $5.00

Barrier 6 · Pace · No leader

No genuine leader here, and #5 Spirit Of Barty can bowl along and make his own luck from gate 6. He’s just run second, Cejay Graham stays on for Gollan, and $5 beats the $4.20 on #2 Dragonne Rouge sitting back in the midfield. I like the one who can control the race. $5, and I’m with him.

Race 7
3:37pm · 1200m · Handicap · 10 runners

14. Surprise Honey $3.30

Barrier 8 · Off Pace · Soft pace

$3.30 for #14 Surprise Honey is fair enough. The tempo looks soft, but the blinkers go on first time and he can let down late from off the speed to run over the top of them. Ben Thompson rides for Gollan, and I’d rather him than She’s Exotic at $4.80. Happy to back him to win.

Race 8
4:13pm · 1615m · Handicap · 8 runners

3. Esjay $5.00

Barrier 4 · Midfield · No leader

Same price as the fav, better draw. #3 Esjay sits four wide of #6 Express Payment on the gate, coming up in barrier 4 while the favourite has to work across from out at 7. With no genuine leader here, Esjay can land a nice spot early and save ground. Tongue tie stays on, Jace Mcmurray rides, and at $5 against the $4.80 on the fav, I know which one I’d rather. I’m with him.
