Devonport on the synthetic today, and the showers about mean it should play fair no matter what falls. Four we’re keen on across the eight races, nothing we’d stake the house on, but a few nice prices sitting in the middle of the card. Knights Reign in the 4 is the shortest of them at $3.50 from gate 1, and after that it’s overs we’re chasing. Regal Hunter and The Tazwegian both around $7 late are worth a look if you don’t mind an each-way type.

There’s genuine speed on, so an off-pacer with a late kick can pick them off late, and he’s run third three starts running, knocking hard on the door. Blinkers go on for Kirra-Lee Lane. At $3.50 I’d rather have him than take $2.60 on #3 Colonel Bogey out in gate 6. On him.

$9.50 for #9 Billie The Great is the sort of overs I’m chasing. She settles off the speed, but so does the $1.65 favourite, #1 Garcon D’Espoir, and in a no-leader race I won’t take odds-on for a horse with the same query. Two seconds off a win, gate 5, and the cross-over nose band goes on for Hayley McCarthy. Each-way at the price.

Race 7 comes down to the draw. #4 Regal Hunter sits off a soft tempo, same as the $3.20 favourite #3 Azonto, but Regal Hunter gets the rail while the fav has the same closing job for less than half the price. $7 for the better gate and the same map. Have it.
