Vanguard Legend was the one that jumped out at me going through the Darwin card. There’s $7 on offer for a horse that drops back and finishes off, and the soft tempo in Race 1 should let her get a soft run into it over the mile. Track’s a Good surface with fine weather, so no excuses there. Only a couple we like off this seven-race card. Lavender Glory in the 3 is the other, drawn 1 and in the right spot to be there when it counts. The rest can wait.

2. Vanguard Legend $7.00

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · Soft pace

#1 Ichiban at $2.30 is short enough for me in a slowly run mile. #2 Vanguard Legend settles back, but he knows how to finish off, and with the blinkers and visors on, Jade Hampson should have him swooping late. He’s got a win and a placing in the mix through his recent runs, and from gate 6 he’ll get cover into the race. At $7, I’m on him each-way.

Race 3
3:16pm · 1200m · Group F&M Hcp (62) · 12 runners

1. Lavender Glory $4.60

Barrier 1 · Midfield · Genuine pace

Genuine speed up front, and #1 Lavender Glory draws the rail to land handy on the fence. Back from a let-up and ran second fresh, the blinkers stay on, and Wayne Davis takes over. She gets cover into the race and a clean crack at them late. $4.60, I’m with her.
