Plenty of value on offer at Coonabarabran, and the one we keep coming back to is Mariota in Race 5 at $4.20. It’s a Heavy 9 out there under grey skies, so this is heavy ground and the map matters. Mariota gets back from a wide gate in a 9-horse field, but there’s no clear leader, so the race should come back to her. Most of our card sits in the each-way range. Cool Nanczye at $8 in the 2 and St Roy at $8 in the last are the two longer ones we’re keen on, and both have a price worth taking. Six races we like across the seven, and the value’s spread right through. On a track like this we want the bigger prices, not the short ones, and that’s where we’ve landed.

Race 1

8. Parissident $5.50

Barrier 2 · Backmarker · Soft pace

The blinkers going on #8 Parissident is the hook at $5.50. He gets back, but he ran third in each of his last two and the gear should sharpen his finish late. Drawn 2, he won’t have to go around them. Billabong is $1.70 from gate 3, and that’s too short for me to leave the value alone. I’m on Parissident each-way.

Race 2
12:56pm · 1200m · Mdn Plate · 10 runners

7. Cool Nanczye $8.00

Barrier 8 · Off Pace · No leader

Eight bucks for #7 Cool Nanczye is plenty. He settles back, but with no genuine leader up front he can wind up and run over the top of them late. Blinkers go on first time for Izzy Neale, and he’s been finding the line with a couple of seconds lately. Villainess at $3.10 has the same job from off the speed, so I’d rather take the bigger price. Map’s there if the tempo holds.

Race 4
2:06pm · 1600m · Plate (C1) · 13 runners

10. Northern Exposure $7.00

Barrier 3 · Pace · Hot pace

The favourite’s too short at $2.70. There’s genuine speed up front, and over a mile on a heavy 9 that hot tempo brings the closers right into it late. #10 Northern Exposure gets back from gate 3, found the line for a third a couple back, and gets the trip he wants. $7, I’m on him.

Race 5Best Bet
2:41pm · 1600m · Hcp (Bm50) · 9 runners

2. Mariota $4.20

Barrier 9 · Backmarker · No leader

#2 Mariota is the one I want. He won a couple back and drops to a nice mark here. With no genuine leader up front he can wind up late from the back, and the favourite Bill Peyto is a backmarker with the very same problem from gate 2, just at a shorter quote. At $4.20 against his $3.90, I’ll take the bigger price. Mariota to win. Best bet.

Race 6 abandoned. Tip void, no result.

2. Denman Deputy $5.00

Barrier 3 · Midfield · Genuine pace

Genuine speed up front, and #2 Denman Deputy gets the gun run from gate 3 while the favourite #8 River Rogue has to come from the back. Blinkers on first time too, and at $5 against the fav’s $4, give me the better trip. Easy.

Race 7 abandoned. Tip void, no result.
Race 7
3:56pm · 1200m · Group Coonabarabran Hcp (Bm50) · 13 runners

3. St Roy $8.00

Barrier 6 · Off Pace · Soft pace

Where’s the value in race 7? #3 St Roy at $8. He keeps finding the winner’s stall, and even off a soft tempo he’s got the late dash to run over the top of them. With the $5 favourite Almost Maybe stuck out in gate 11, give me the bigger price.
