Big fields right through at Cairns, three races with a dozen or more runners, and the trips are all short, 950m at the bottom and only 1450m at the top. Nothing on the card asks a horse to stay. Sensei Girl caught the eye in race 2, won last start and firmed from $9.50 into $6 for Gavin Kinlyside. Blackthorn is another we like the look of, in from $6 to $4 in race 5 with two placings from five runs this prep, and the rail out to the true entire course means the inside is not the usual free kick. Odegaard is worth another look in race 7, the day’s richest at $100,000, with two wins already this preparation and money coming from $7.50 into $4.60. Selections drop here around 10am race morning once the markets firm.
