Eight on the card at Belmont and we’ve only landed on three, so this is a meeting where we’d rather wait than have a swing in every race. The going is a Soft 7 with an overcast sky, so the ground is the thing to respect more than chase. Shaula in Race 5 is the one we’re keenest on at $5.50, sitting midfield from gate 3 in a race with no clear leader, which is the kind of shape that suits a horse that can pick its moment. The other two are at bigger prices and worth a look, but the read across the day is simple: pick your spots, leave the rest alone.

The favourite, #1 Maxwhooshtapin, carries the same query but settles even further back from gate 8, and I’m not taking $4.20 on that. Blinkers stay on, Lucy Fiore rides, and at $5.50 Shaula gets the closer run. On her to win.

$6.50 on #5 Barecove Rock, and I’m happy to take it. Blinkers on, he settles midfield from gate 5, and he’s run third at each of his last two. There’s genuine speed up front, so he gets the tempo to come over the top of them late. The favourite, #1 Rock In Wonder, has to lead and hold the lot from $4.60. I’d rather have the closer at the bigger price.
