We keep coming back to $4.80 for The Catch in Race 2 at Beaudesert. He’ll settle last from gate 7 in a race with no real leader, so there’s a risk they go slow and leave him too much to do. In a field of 8 at that price, I’m happy to take that risk. It’s a Good 3 and fine overhead, so the track shouldn’t be an excuse for anyone. We’re keen on three of the 9 races, and the other two should get a good run on the speed, one leading and one sitting just off it.

No genuine leader here, so I don’t want $2.70 on #3 Navy Nina when she settles even further back than my pick. #2 The Catch jumps from gate 7 with Les Tilley aboard for Jeff Dunn, and he should land a couple of lengths closer to whatever ends up rolling forward. His last few runs haven’t been flash, I’ll own that, but at $4.80 against that favourite I’m on him to win.

I’m with #5 Esprit Du Jour at $3.10. She won last start, jumps from gate 2 and should lead a soft tempo, while #2 Certified Copy chases from midfield.

Three seconds on the bounce, and a win just before that. #3 Water Lad keeps knocking on the door. He’ll settle back from gate 2 in a soft-run race, but I like the way he picks them off late, and #7 Secret Rose only sits a couple of lengths closer. Risk is the tempo stays too slow. Live with it at $2.50.
